Just wondering ... I'm looking at having a merry widow / plain jane made. What kinds of wood do think give the best hit and feedback and why? how does the wood affect the hit?
Im asking because Ive heard that ebony and other hevier woods dont seem to give as good of a hit or feedback as lighter woods like bacote etc.
Is this true?
Any and all opinions on this will be greatly appreciated, especially from cuemakers !

I'll go out on a limb here and say DRY wood. The wet stuff really sucks, and tends to warp. :D
Getting more specific than that is too subjective, and people have way to many weird ideas.
 
The hit and feedback is sooooo subjective, but IMO (not a cuemaker by the way) almost any rosewood is hard to beat. That includes cocobolo, brazilian and indian rosewoods, kingwood, african blackwood, and tulipwood. I like working with bocote, and use it in a lot of my woodworking, but have never played with a bocote cue. I also like the way purple heart plays, but don't much care for its looks.

I would say that Hard Maple, Purple Heart and Bocote might be the best woods from a hit and balance standpoint. They all three render excellent feedback. Purple Heart and Bocote are not the easiest to finish but once finished properly look great.

It really depends on the particular hit you call a good one.
Some like to feel the hit thru the cue to get better cue ball control , here I would go with maple, either curly,birdseue or tiger.
Others like not to feel the hit as much and hear it , rather than feel it as much thru the cue , here I would go with Ebony,cocobola,purpleheart,bacote,and even some of the burls like thya. All these hit very solid where maple lets some of the hit transfer thru the cue.
Remember , it also has alot to do with type of pin and joint you install also. And the type of joint size and taper you use on your shaft.
