cues on a plane

No, not the sequel to the Samuel L. Jackson movie, although I'd probably watch it.

I assume I won't be allowed to bring a cue case on board, have a lot of people had trouble with cues in their luggage? Obviously, I'll want to put it in a larger bag. But I guess if/when they see the case, those grubby hands will be all over it. I saw an old thread where someone had their cue taken out and damaged. I suppose I should be grateful if there's only BBQ sauce all over it, instead of being broken. Gotta be safe, right?

If it was a long trip, I'd consider shipping it, but not really feasible in this case.

I was thinking of putting a piece of masking tape that says, "Pool cues - please be gentle," since they might not even know what the case is. But that might just give the impression that it is more expensive than it actually is, and it might disappear. It's a fairly inexpensive cue, but I'm still worried about it!

Airports

I fly frequently and always take my cues. I have a 2x4 which fits perfectly in a free Fed Ex tube from Kinkos.A few months back when flying back from Vegas they opened the tube and kept a case of "Sniper" tips. I guess they thought it was some kind of terroristic device.:) I definetley would not lock anything with cues in it. They will remove the locks.

After recently losing a laptop that was in checked luggage, I think you should be worried. My suspicion is on TSA which x-rayed the suitcase and surely knew a laptop was in there. It was the only time I've checked a laptop and the only time I've lost luggage.

For taking cues, I have a suitcase that is big enough that the cue case fits in diagonally, so the cue is doubly protected. I don't take my expensive cue. Remember:

Never check anything with an airline that you wouldn't be willing to give to a poor person on the street.

Cues On A Plane

No, you are not allowed to take a cue in the cabin of a plane. However, look accross the aisle and you may see someone with a metal cane in their hand. You can check a cue to be put in the baggage compartment of the plane but many cue makers warn against it because the temperature gets extremely cold during flight. If you do check it, ask for a cardboard garment bag to put it in for added protection. Best bet - ship it and insure it.

I love seeing people carrying their $50 Wilson tennis racquets and skateboards while my beautiful cues in their equally beautiful case are being tossed around somewhere in the belly of the airplane. Top notch anti-terrorism tactics, National Security!

I thought about shipping it ahead of time, but Aaron told me it's just going to end up on a plane anyway. *shrug*

I just took my baby to China with me, no dings, no problems. I ordered a Joe Porper travel bag like this - click on the pic for a good picture:

It was $30 and is a nice, well made tote bag. There was room for extra stuff we bought too - so it's pretty handy.

I just stuck my Justis 2X4 in there and locked it with TSA locks. TSA locks can be opened by security but not by baggage handlers without evidence, so there is less likelyhood your bag will show but your cue will be gone.

You need a hard case inside the travel bag because bags get stacked and there can be a lot of pressure placed on them.

When checking in, always make sure that the airline tag placed on your bag at the airport has both your name and destination on it. Many bags that are lost are misrouted because airport personnel put the wrong tag on the bag.

I saw some people in the airport with their cuecase on the way back from APA Nationals. I asked them how they could bring their cues on board because I had heard they were not letting them on. They told me they only had their cases, the cues were in their luggage. So they will let you take your case on but not the cues I guess.

I've been mulling over options for a few weeks now, I contacted the airline im flying with and they suggested the following,

1. TSA locks are a must ( theory here is the baggage handlers cant get inot the locks and are less likely to riffle threw stuff that may be a test for theft
2. Show up early to check-in, the TSA does private inspections with you standing their watching them, maing sure you items are properly repacked after inspection and relocked and tagged.

3. Pack the case and cues like your shipping them ups or fed-ex. case in a box, bubble wrapped and insulated.

I thought about shipping straight to the executie west, but i work for a major shipping company and know for sure, if the cues arent there when i get there, whether someone at the hotel signed for them or not, im not getting anything back, the shipper will put it on the hotel and the hotel will say they never got them.

So you would check this box in as a separate piece of luggage, it'd be too big to fit into something else. I just have a 1X1 case, so my plan is to stuff it into a larger bag. I almost forgot about those TSA locks, I have to get those.

Thanks...

Traveling cues

I found a "hockey bag" many years ago which is slightly larger than my "Good leather" cue case. Cue case is about 33" and the hockey case is about 39". I pack my clothes around the cue case in the bag and it easily protects my case and cues. Traveling to Aus/NZ/ K L / Singapore/ and have had no problems for over 15 years. I was doing this long before the current TSA security fiasco!
Back in the 80's, when I was leaving LA going to the south pacific and carrying my cue case onto the plane (B4 TSA), the airport security actually inspected my entire case and cues, and even wanted to try and UNSRCEW THE BASE BUTT SCREW! A slight problem occurred and I was lucky that one of the Supervisors was a POOL NUT!

I've taken my cue to the Philippines twice, and also flown to the states three times and have never had any troubles. I have one of those padded lockable cue bags that you put your entire cue case into. However, when leaving traveling to and from the states, I've always been told to leave it unlocked or else the TSA officials will literally cut the bag open if they feel the need to inspect. I always stand there and watch personally when they check the bags in and one time, I let loose on a Japanese official for not being careful enough.
