Cues the pros use

This is probably been brought up before...But was wondering why when they introduce the players on TV or a tournment for that matter ,why don't they say what kind of cue they are using??

They don't do it for golf or bowling, so I don't see why they'd do it for pool.

Sometimes it’s on their shirts. Golfers usually have their club manufacturer in big print on their bags, but you can’t tell which model their using. (most of the time it’s something not available to the regular Joe’s.) Frankly, I normally don’t really want to use the same equipment as the pros. Their swings/strokes/rolls are at a different level than mine. Any of the golfers out there that ever tried to play with Jack Nicklaus’s old MacGregor Muirfield forged clubs knows what I’m talking about. He won major championships with them, while I can’t hit with them at all with my pitiful 7 handicap.

All of the pro's are or want to be sponsored by any cue maker. they really don't care. They just want the 50k to 100k that the sponsor pays. But, the type of cue they use affects them very little- because they customize the cue from the beginning- new tip, new taper, change weight, different shafts... etc. ----------and the stick plays a role but the stroke is what really makes them play at the pro level. Any pro can pick up a house cue and play, but a great cue helps them play even better.

I totally agree...i know there stuff is custom and it's not that i want to use the same cue...i just thought it would be a good idea to get there sponsers name out there ..i mean isn't that why they give them or pay them to use their cues??

Plus many of them don't use the same cue from one event to the next. You'd be amazed how many pros are given free cues to use and then sell them immediately in the next state. Many are sponsored by certain makers, and don't even use that cue thinking the average Joe won't know the difference. I guess I can speak of this because he's no longer sponsored by them...but I clearly remember one pro...lets just say his name is Rodney....was sponsored by someone, lets say like Fury...and he was playing in events, wearing their shirts but using his Szamboti cue. Even made the cover of a magazine and you could clearly see its an old Szamboti he's waving in the air...not a Fury...all the while they are paying for magazine ads touting Rodney is using their cue. Like BB said above...most players who use a sponsors cue, take it to their favorite cueman and have new shafts, pins, etc. until they get it where they are comfortable. I've seen some things, and honestly done some things that would shock you. You have to understand though that they must use that equipment to make a living...so they want it to perform to their liking.;)

That would amount to free television advertising by the promoters and they are not into giving away free advertising. They make money by selling advertising, so they would be reluctant to give it away. A cue logo on shirt is about as good as you can get, if you can get that. I wish they would allow larger logos. Paint em up like they do bowling shirts and race cars. They used to do that. But most televised events limit size of logo.

TAP, TAP, TAP!!! The truth has been told...

The best source of information on this subject that I have seen is a thread that is over in the IPT Forum... the thread lists the cues that the IPT members shoot with... so you'll get an idea of what ~100 better players around the world use. rackmsuckr (Linda Carter) was instrumental in emailing a lot of the IPT members to get the information (iirc).

I'll see if I can find it and post a link here with a later edit.

here you go... click here for the thread

Thanks for the legwork CigarDave. I guess the question is... Do they actually play with them?

I believe so. IIRC, most all of the responses from Linda's emails came directly from the player, or alternatively from someone very close to the player.

I think the cue makers should at least give the guys/gals shirts with the name of the cue on it. I am sure some do, but come to think about it, i don't recall many.

I remember watching 9 ball on Fox Sports Network a couple years ago and in the little bar at the bottom of the screen cue information was given. I really liked that, but alas, I haven't seen anything like this since.

Keith McCready does - and I don't pay him.

Jack, a great magazine ad for your cues could be kindof like the Capitol One commercials, but instead of David Spade saying " what's in your wallet?" you could have Keith saying " what's in your case?":D :D
