CueTable Tournament - Who's in?

For Colin's route, I looked long and hard at doing the same thing with the 4 and 5 balls, but thought I would get bashed for the difficult position after the 4 and the long shot on the 5. Plus, the route I was looking at used the 2 to slide over behind the 3, then used the 7 to transition nicely to the 4, leaving the 1 as the 8-ball position shot after the 5.

I think that works a bit better. Coming so far across the table with the draw off of the two just seems too dangerous to me.

Big thanks to Colin for taking the initiative to run this tourney. It was some of the best spent time I have had on the forum and I look forward to another similar event. I really enjoyed participating and getting to meet more AZ posters.

The way I have been scoring the other games, it probably encouraged you and jsp to pick minimal CB movement paths. But just having a bit of fun here and trying to work out what makes best sense as a type of scoring, or analysis system.

The screw back for position is probably a shot that 9-ballers don't play so much. It is more common in 8-ball I think, when less paths are available, and it's quite common in snooker. Can be played quite accurately with practice I think.

I find in snooker and 8-ball, there is more playing for straight on angles for stun through, back, across position. Whereas in 9-ball, there is much more use of rails for pattern play.

Colin:

My background is strictly 8-ball and I am just now learning 9-ball strategy, which is quite different for me.

As far as minimal cueball movement, that is the single biggest thing I ever learned about playing 8-ball (to win)... I found that the better pattern I chose, the less I moved the cueball, and the better my position was, so I won many more games. I am a true student of pattern play and have spent years and years learning what patterns are best for me.

You are correct in the fact that I would normally not play the one-rail shot behind the 9... I use that draw shot A LOT, but for this layout, I thought it was just too good to pass on.

To be honest, I never paid attention to how you were scoring, I honestly drew the runout that I thought I would have the best chance of performing in reality. I am certain that if I had these layouts in the real world, I would play very similar patterns.

Very sorry to hear about your daugher having surgery this morning...
Hi Bill, Thanks for the kind words. :) I'm also sorry to hear the your son is not 100%. Believe me, I can sympathize. I'm sure both of our kids will be up and about creating havoc in our living quarters sooner than we know it.

Also, congratulations on the win! You are officially the first ever champion of the prestigious AZB CueTable Tournament. Colin will soon make this tournament the most happening tournament on the web. I'm guessing by next year, the members participating in the tourney will jump from 8 to 128. Colin would have to quit the IPT such that he can judge these tournaments full time. :D

And three cheers to Colin for taking the time to hold this revolutionary tournament and meticulously judge every single match. We all appreciate your services. Hope you get some help judging for the next tournaments.

BillYards,
Well a mostly 8-ball background seems an anomaly on this board....good to know there's another one:-)

btw: I wouldn't claim my way is significantly better, and for some it could be the wrong way. Sometimes we see the the options differently when we're over a real table.

I wanted to raise a different option, and to put forth the idea of playing toward a 'BIH' position as an option when there is a path to it, that has good margin and backups.

I'd usually rather make a mistake early rather than late in my outs to, so I keep an eye out for slightly harder shots early that could make the finish much easier.

This tourney has been good exercise, brain training I think. I hope some of the participants and readers got something out it that could improve their 8-ball game.

[edit]
Just saw jsp's post above.
Thanks and you're welcome:)
Was more time consuming than I imagined but a good learning experience. I'll need some staff to handle a 128 draw lol :p

Maybe we'll do this or something similar after and break and when Cuetable gets up and running properly again. Would need to work out something with the judging....perhaps a panel made up of the entrants.

Cheers,
Col
