Curious if this still goes on in some of the big money tournaments now?

I begged a young man to split once in a local tourney because it was really late. I was in the hot seat and had the advantage. No way, he wanted to win all or nothing. He had to double dip me in order to win and won the first set 7 - 6. The second set was not even close and I won. I shook his hand and congratulated him on his tenacity and was proud of him for it. We both left happy and played again several other times..

Sometimes winning for the sake of winning is the best motivator even over money!

I used to go to tournaments and agree with the one traveling with me to split what we won. Sometimes we agreed to a 60 / 40 split for the one who does best to keep the incentive to play our best. I see nothing wrong with it.
My son decided no matter how we were splitting the money he wants a winner of the tournament and makes me play if we meet in the finals.

I can't help but wonder if with so much money involved are there still savers and splitting going on? Is there a mechanism they have in place to prevent it.
In smaller tournaments there is not even a pretense about it, even having players not bothering to play a final, they just split. I remember one tournament where Parica just let Tommy Kennedy win and have the trophy. The spectators once they saw what was going on wandered away not watching the final. They should have at least made it look good.
Yes as much as ever, until there’s real money in pool. Savers or hedging will always be a unspoken thing(mostly) some guys talk. But there will always be deals. Nothing wrong with that

The dump, that’s another story.

Easy to solve that: just shorten the difference between 1st and 2nd prize money. In that way, no interest in making the split deal and any one will want the 1st place, because competing objective is to achieve the highest place possible.
It’s not just 1st and 2nd it’s way down the bracket too or players taking cross % of each other

There’s a lot more going on than you realize. However it isn’t your or my money and doesn’t effect the outcome of the tourney so not a big deal.

Guys trying to earn a living spreading out the $ more evenly is all it is.

As I said last post the “dump” is a problem but that’s a totally different thing.

what is a "saver" ?
More if the loser would finish 1 out of the money. Say winner gets 1000.
They both agree loser of their match gets a certain amount, say 250.
The winner can win further too, by placing higher.

We routinely made savers pre-event. Had to as bad as the payouts were.

Cross % every tourney is a big thing.

I got 10% of you, you got 10% of me in every tourney we both play in.

That’s arraignment is a very common thing. In pool and other tourneys between similar strength players

I’ve chopped 1st/2nd without playing because it was 3am and just didn’t want to play anymore. Small stuff in this case.

When ever there is $

There will be deals

Hope this clears it up for everyone

Would they still play a real game? If they'd rather split the money to make sure they both can eat that's cool. I guess they don't need my approval, but I'd like to see them play their best. It's not like they are boxers getting beat up.
They are gonna play their best when they both know they are gonna eat. Savers don’t effect the quality of play your gonna see in a negative way.

A dump will effect how the set is played(well the outcome for sure) but it’s also undetectable if done properly.

That’s pool and lots of other sports/games as well
