Curly Maple shaft question

Some months back I picked up a cue that has 2 matching curly maples shafts. The question I was wondering about is, in cue maker's opinion, do curly shafts deflect or squirt less than straight grain maple?

I'm asking because I've really taken to this cue and it seems that the adjustment I have to make when using inside english is less than usual and I feel very confident with either shaft.

I did search and didn't really see this addressed other than 1 question on curly shafts way back in 07.

What do you think? I guess also wondering why you don't see more of them?

Cue ball deflection is a product of "Effective" tip end mass and how far from center you strike the ball. Given this, the only way to have any real noticeable change to cue ball squirt would be to reduce the tip end mass.

If the new shafts have a lighter ferrule material or construction method, then that could certainly reduce the amount of cue ball deflection, or squirt. Otherwise, it could only come from the curly maple being significantly less dense than what you had before.

I'm guessing it's the ferrules.

Although this can reduce the squirt a noticeable amount, it's still quite a bit more cue ball squirt than what you will find with the top LD shafts.

Some players like curly shafts and order them. The first guy I noticed having curly shafts was Bob Byrne. I think he mentions his preference in one of his videos. As to why you don't see more of them, my simple opinion would be that cue makers save curly/tiger for their butts.

I've shot for 40 years plus and these are the first curly shafts I've had and don't find the figure distracting at all. I could see being put off by a blued ferrule or even maybe a Kamui clear tip but the shaft grain, not a factor... for me anyway.

A lot of people that tried my BEM/Curly shaft did that, it takes some getting used to.

Same here. It was strange at first, but a dirty ferrule bugs the hell out of me more than the eyes and rings in my birdseye/curly shaft.
