I have a chance to pick up a really nice piece of tight Curl Walnut. I've never used Walnut in a cue and would like some feedback before I spend the money.

I like it. My favorite is eastern black walnut but it's not easy finding it with really good figure, almost impossible to find it with burl. Walnut in general is a softer variety of wood to be used in cues but I use it with no problems. It's fine once you learn what it can & cannot be used for, and learn how to use it. Not many woods are as beautiful as figured walnut, hence the popularity of it in all variations of wood working. And my favorite part of it is that it's a domestic wood. I love using domestic woods.

Curly Claro Walnut is my favorite, and the Circassian from Turkey is super cool too. There are strains of hybrid Walnut that are much harder and better suited for cues, but coring can make them all potential candidates for a super looking cue. I use the Claro for Duck calls, really sweet tone.

Thanks Much! The piece had such tight fiddleback in it that I couldn't leave it behind.
Forgot to mention the size of the piece, 115" x 16.5" x 2.25. Ya it was big!

Yeah that's true curl, not stump wood. That's the rare stuff. Probably from a giant tree, on the outside of a crotch area. Prime gun stock lumber!!!

Well, if you wanna cut some up and part it out to help offset your costs please let me know.

Sight Unseen!

I acquired about a dozen turning squares of Circassian walnut from a gunstock maker about 2 or 3 years ago--it is beautiful and can't wait to make it into cues. Claro walnut is another keeper. Sam Maloof (may he rest in peace) used Claro and Ziricote as two of his favorite woods--but what would Sam know--his Claro rocking chairs only sell for well over $100,000. I have made several shafts from black walnut and they hit just like maple, stayed straight and where a joy to work with.

Just to clarify the curly piece I picked up was Black Walnut. I sanded and sealed a piece with West Systems to see what the finished product would look like. Very happy with the results! I'm thinking a cored Fiddleback Black walnut forearm with a 3 part sectional handle from Fiddleback Maple and a Fiddleback Black Walnut butt. Moisture read in at around 6%.

I'd give my left nut for a fiddleback black walnut board that size. True story. Black walnut is the blackest of walnut & by far the hardest from my experiences. I have seen some that rivaled ebony in darkness until you really look close. I love that stuff.
