...it's totally a geezer game. But hey, I'm almost there at 49. Cue the SRV & BB King and let's roll!

"Bartender, make that a double Redbull, please!"

Seriously, I am liking it, though. :)

For sure for the longest time it was definitely a geezer game but now and for quite some time everyone's playing it round these parts - yutes included !

I have no problems calling things the way they are. One pocket is a...let's call it a "mature"...game.

That doesn't mean it's bad or unworthy, but a decade ago I would've asked that the person who invited me to play be cut off or risk being punched.

Still, it makes you think and, honestly, there's never anything wrong with thinking. There were a few shots where I amazed myself and there were quite a few shots where I realized that I shotwa way too hard. I hope that I can pass this along to some more exciting games. There most definitely is some benefit to one pocket, but I'm going to hold out making it my preferred game until I hit 70 or so.

It's the only game I enjoy lately. Tap tap cheers to all new & experienced 1p players. 1P is a game in game.

I'm 66 but took up One Pocket many, many years ago. If you really want to learn some things about the game, I highly recommend Tom Wirth's book. "Wirth" every penny!

Simply the best...

Some may have noticed, the most accomplished one pocket player's these days, are only in theirs 20's or 30's!..It is without a doubt, the most demanding game out there, when it comes to the skill needed to excel at it..It is also for sure, the best game to gamble at! ..IMHO, it is the greatest game on a pool table!..When they finally realize what they are missing, guys like Archer, Strickland and DeChane will flock to it..But they will always lag behind those who took it up from the start of their careers!..:sorry:

PS..The only "geezer" thing about it, is it takes a very mature, well developed brain to figure out all the intricacies..;) (the Pearl is trying to learn, but he is still well behind SVB, Orcullo, and many others)

I haven't yet reached the level of interest where I'm ready to delve into a book about the game, but that day may come.

Right now it's just fun wading into the game as a newbie. I'll be looking forward to more competitive players as I go. I did well last night, but I also know I haven't faced a really good player yet.

After a few games with some of those I might be ready for that book.

I understand, however there is a lot of information out there besides Tom's book, his is just one of, if not the best available. And, knowledge is half to three quarters of the game:wink:

Its the game with the biggest action right now by far. Its one of the only games where a fish can match up with a pro and have a chance. Its like chess and straight pool had a baby. I'm only 22 and have only been playing for a couple of years but I guarantee that one pocket is the game I have played the most. I really need to play more rotation and 8 ball though.

One pocket improves the finer points of the game too. Kicking, banking and cue ball control are extremely important.

I like one pocket too and I know I'll get killed for this but here goes. I see young guys and older guys playing one pocket but it seems it's the game of choice for older guys. By the way, I am an older guy in my mid 60's. I think they gravitate toward one pocket because they no longer have the power stroke that is sometimes required for the rotation games. I still prefer the rotation games for the stroke and excitement. Incidentally, I think 14.1 is the king of games. In 14.1 you need every type of stroke there is, you need to know how to play safe, you need to use all sorts of bridges, and you must be good with the rake.

Wrong again - I got the bug at the tender age of 18 - of course, I was never ADD or any
of the variations thereof.

One of the few times I will completely agree!

When I was playing a lot, there was this kid I would give the last 3 and 2 on the wire to 9 playing 9 ball! And would rob him blind!!!

Anyway, I wouldn't play him one pocket him giving me 9-7! He would rob me blind because I wouldn't use the stupid broken thing in my head much!

What I learned,,,, patience;)

He won't play me with me giving 10-6;) why?? Patience!

It's THE greatest game ever!

I think the old-timers still have the stroke, it's the aim on the long shots that fades.

I started playing One Pocket as my initiation into pool. The room was filled with One Pocket players of all ages. Many of whom were teenage kids like me. Since then and due in large part to the changes in nine ball rules, more young players with immense talent are making the conversion from nine and ten ball to One Pocket. The reason is simple. One Pocket allows a player to protect their money far better. This game will all but guarantee a player to step to the table virtually every game. This cannot be said for the rotation games. In addition, Nine Ball and Ten Ball are typically played where the winner of one game gets the break in the following game. We all know what can happen. A tough opponent breaks and runs rack after rack while you sit waiting for an opportunity to step to the table. And what are you looking at when he has finally missed? Quite possibly nothing but kicks and jumps because he happened to catch a roll and leave you safe.

These things happen in all games, including One Pocket, but the difference is that you will have more options to choose from. Even if you lose that particular game you will know that you will definitely have an opportunity to redeem yourself in the following game.

There are countless great Nine Ball players who have seen the light and though they still play and enjoy the rotation games, they also understand the importance to their development as a pool player to become a sound One Pocket player as well. Especially if they wish to be somewhat successful gambling at pool.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes you are dead. It's not about the eyes, stroke, age, blah blah. 1Pocket is a hell of a game. It's loved or hated. It's an art, it's a puzzle, it's game of know how. I'm not knocking any games or comparing...but 1pocket has the juice. A 1pocket player with some knowledge can stand against a stronger player. Also two people are playing against each other...not the table. It's a constant exchange of moves....you don't sit there and watch your opponent run balls/racks.

Have fun playing 1p. I had a blast when I first started. Played guys that were my level...such as no idea what we're doing. We shot balls up table, took crazy banks, did what looked reasonable. One day I decided I'd like to learn. Had no idea what to expect or if I can improve. I'm a guy that could never learn pool on my own. I like instructors. I got introduced to Tom Wirth. First lesson is Take Outs. Getting the ball(s) away from your opponents pocket. We moved on from there.
I'm starting to understand the game. I have my moments...good plays, slop, mistakes, sell outs, great banks, good traps and so on. Regardless of my table play I can't get enough of 1P. I'm not afraid to play anyone as I do not gamble can only get better. If I lose to a better player...I'm suppose to lose. If I win I feel great that I played a respectable game. Tom's book is the map. It takes you there. Learn one thing and your level increases. Have fun playing for now....you obviously enjoy the game. When you want to bump up and destroy your buddies get 1P..(Controlled Aggression). Learn about elements for a trap. Learn to trap using the Mitt. Escape a trap. Learn what to look for in general. Have the edge. And mostly have fun learning,

Gold Crown, you and I have played one pocket, eight ball, and nine ball. I am not that bad at one pocket. I like to think I hold my own. I know given a choice you would strictly play one pocket. I just haven't been quite as hooked as you. Maybe I am missing something.
By the way, your pens are beautiful pieces of art and functional. Looking forward to you coming back up north. I'll work on my one pocket and maybe take you to school when you come up. LOL.
