I see all kinds of different posts with information about facings but thought I might cut to the chase and ask the professional mechanics.

What is the best material to use for cushion facings and who sells them.

for k55 Gc1 cushions.

Thank you,

Allen

My opinion, your best bet is to order a set of facings straight from Diamond.

3/16 neoprene is the way to go. Diamond sells them like said above. I have some as well if you are interested. $10 a set plus shipping.

A question about the 3/16 neoprene. I have some of those shims, and they seem rather soft to me, compared to the facing of the rail rubber, which is really quite hard (at least on my GCIII and the other GCIII's I play on at the local hall). As a result of being hard, balls are easily banked off the facing into the pocket (i.e. down the rail shots). With 3/16 neoprene shims, is there more of a tendency for the ball to "rattle" and not pocket, due to the reduced angle of reflection caused by the softer facing material?

No. It absorbs the impact and deadens the hit into the facing resulting in an easier pocked ball. When those other facings turn rock hard, (if they are not now, the will) they make the balls rattle more because they do not absorbe the inpact of the ball. Also, the extra 1/16 of neoprene will stop the cloth from cutting through in the corner pockets from the impact of the balls hitting the wooden subrail behind it.

just like to add that the pocket angles have alot to do with the way a pocket accepts or reject balls no matter which facing is used. i use 3/16 black neoprene also.

That is absolutely true. With a 141* miter angle and a 13* drop angle on the corner pockets using the 3/16 neoprene a 2-3 ball combination ball can be fired down the rail at nearly break speed and be pocketed every time.

If you have the same pocket dimensions and angles on 2 different tables, the only difference being the thickness of facings, one table having 1/8 and the other having 3/16 the, the 1/8 facings will rattle more balls in the jaws.

Don't forget the durometer rating

3/16 neoprene is only half of the correct equation. The other half is the durometer rating of the neoprene. The rating determines the hardness of the facing. The 3/16"-60 durometer is what you need to specify when ordering the facing material.

so if i want thicker, then 1/4" neoprene with 60 durometer rating

this site is awesome. learned something new again.

thanks
