custom cue specs

What are some of the basic specs one should consider for having a custom cue made? Wood type, joint, taper, ect. I realize this covers a very broad range of choices, but just for a starting point. I would rather have one made by someone who is passionate about his craft as oppose to someone cranking them out on a assembly line. IMHO.

Good opportunity to design your own cue. Look at lots of cues to get ideas.
Choose woods, joint, wrap or wrapless, inlays, predator shaft or the maker's own.

Inlays, ivory or other. Windows? 4 points, or more, or none. Vaneers and their colors.

Put your design together and submit to cuemakers of your choice.

I did this with Jerry Olivier and was very satisfied with the end result.

I've already met the cuemaker I intend to use. He put a protaper on one of my sticks. He did a very nice touch up on the other. I plan on meeting with him next week for a discussion on what I want. You answer starts me down that road.

Get the wood that appeals to you. I'm a Cocobolo or Ebony guy. Ask the maker if he will re-adjust the weight if you think it is too heavy or too light after a few months of playing with it. Get 2 shafts. Do you like a standard 29" shaft or a 30".
Get the best you can afford. Customs are fun and personalized and will last a long time if you take of it. Enjoy the project.

I would consider:

- wrapless or wrapped

- overall weight

- length

- joint material and type of joint (ie. ivory or steel, flat faced or piloted)

- handle thickness

- shaft diameter

These are the basics - then you have all the design stuff.

If the maker you picked out knows his stuff he should be able to tell you everything you need to know. Ask him and have him show you examples.

Cue Specs

I've ordered several cues from several makers. The last cue I ordered was a Jacoby cue. I specified every aspect of the cue and sent them the specs. I included the point lengths, wrap, butt sleeve and the butt cap size. Shaft tapper every aspect I could think of. I called them and specified the butt diameter size. Here is what I sent them....

So keep in mind when ordering a custom cue, be as specific as you can be and get what you want.
Here is what I recieved.. overall I was very satisfied except for the fact that the forearm was lightly stained when I asked for a natural no stain maple forearm.

Nice looking cue you got there!

I like the Cocobolo, a friend of mine bought a OB with that kind of wood.
It hadn't occured to me to order two shafts, that is an excellent suggestion. I like playing snooker and woudl like the smaller shaft for that. I plan on sticking with the 29 inch lenght.

All of these suggestions and facts will help me decide what to look for.

Thanks GoldCrown n Cdryden
I think i got a really good deal. When I called jacoby I had a discusion on starting from a basic 4 point cue which wasn't priced much, well when all was said and done I got a price of $485. Six months later when I recieved the cue I mentioned I wanted to order another in a dark Rosewood, I was told the prices had increased and the price would be quite more. The nice lady did say they would honor my previous price. Unfortunately I never ordered the second cue which I now regret. Its been more than a year.
