Custom Cue??

This topic has been brought up 100's of times and I am sure will be brought up another 100, however there is no right answer.

You need to hit with the cues yourself and find one that fits what you are looking for in a cue, as I can tell you what feels "best" to me, but you might completely dislike it.

If you go off of what others say you will be searching forever.

yes thats true but if a lot of people say one type of cue it will narrow my search. Then I can go out and try hitting that cue.

Jeff, Mike is right on about what he says here. No 2 people will agree on what a nice custom cue should look like, let alone how it should play. Even with the same cuemaker, there are variables like type of joint, pin, woods used, shaft type and size, taper, etc that will impact how the cue plays.

Below are links to two major cue makers associations.
http://www.cuemakers.org/
http://www.internationalcuemakers.com/

Go to each and check out their rosters. You will find many top notch cue makers. There are also many more great cue makers who choose not to belong to either of these organizations.
These cue makers are all very successful and they all make great cues. However, you will not like cues from all of them, just as you will not like all cues recommended by other players on this forum.
You have to find a cue that you like, not the cues that everyone else likes.

imho I like scruggs, bluegrass, bryan mordt makes a good resonable priced cue, suspect I'd really like runde if I could find one to try out, carter (though I have one for sale I still think they hit great and will probably keep mine) for the price, bob dzuricky for the price. Carter and DZ cues both hit very well, and are not expensive in the custom market.

Lots and Lots of makers out there, find some cues you can hit with that are in your price range.

Mike Johnson (Jensen Cues) makes a great playing cue. You can pick up a used one pretty cheap. I have one and I love it. Tim Scruggs makes a great hitting cue, plus they hold their value. I have a Bob Frey Sneaky I got from here http://www.cuesnthings.com/cues/sneakypete/. Its a great playing cue also.

Best cue builder out there

If you don't try JW Petree, you are f**king up. He defines customer service, builds a SWEET playing cue, and the attention to detail is right on.

AND, his prices are still reasonable, and he delivers real close to when he says he will, or better.

IMO

Who makes the best custom cue to play with?

Here is the real answer. YOU have to know the specifications that suit you. Any good cue maker can make it for you. If YOU don't know what those specifications are, then you'll be searching forever. There is the real answer grasshopper.

Even if you had a close guess but got it with the wrong tip, it changes everything. NO ONE can answer your question. They just tell you what they like. Even most of them don't know the specs on their cue.

It makes a difference, and I don't mean pretty inlays, ivory joints, ferrules etc. I mean the two most critical components of any cue, the shaft taper/diameter and the tip. Put that with weight, balance point, length and butt size to you're liking, then you'll have the best custom cue for YOU. BTW many there are many so-called custom cues for sale. But remember, they are not custom unless it's made for YOU. But you don't know the answers just yet.

I'm just suggesting you look at a few cue makers, get price quotes, talk to them if you can. I'll make a suggestion on one cue maker that makes a great cue for a player. IMO, and then it's all up to you. Do research.
If you know what you want & if you don't, he can help you, I would get in touch with Pat Diveney. I have just got one of his cues in the past 2 weeks, Pat's cues play amazingly well. He will make what you want. He's a real nice guy, customer service is top notch, prices are good in my opinion. Pat's cues are a great addition to any player or collection, IMO.
