Man upset over taxes charged for 'drive-by' remark


ST. PAUL, Minn. – No matter how frustrating taxes get, it's not a good idea to threaten to do a drive-by shooting at the state Department of Revenue. Authorities charged man with two counts of terroristic threats after he got upset and allegedly told a Department of Revenue supervisor he was going to do a drive-by shooting.

According to the complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court, a Revenue Department supervisor said a 55-year-old man told her in a phone call, "Maybe I will just do a (expletive) drive-by."

The man told the St. Paul Pioneer Press he actually told the supervisor he just felt like doing a drive-by. He said there was no mention of shooting.

He said the dispute was over $181.44 in sales taxes he believes was wrongfully charged his custom pool cue business.

South St. Paul man charged over 'drive-by' remark to Revenue Department

Here's a tax tip that may come in handy if frustrations mount when the April 15 filing deadline approaches: Don't threaten to do a drive-by shooting of the state Department of Revenue building.

Police have charged a South St. Paul man with two counts of terroristic threats after he got upset over a tax dispute and allegedly told a Department of Revenue supervisor he was going to do a drive-by shooting, according to a criminal complaint filed in Ramsey County District Court.

In response to the March 25 threat, Department of Revenue employees at the Stassen Building in the state Capitol complex were directed to exit the building only via the tunnel system to the parking ramp, and all first-floor window blinds were closed.

Then, state police arrested Stephen Eugene Morris, 55.

According to the complaint, a Revenue Department supervisor reported that Morris told her, "Maybe I will just do a (expletive) drive-by," during a telephone call in which he disputed a tax assessment against him.

"The supervisor reported that she became extremely scared as a result of that statement," according to the complaint.

In an interview, Morris said he actually told the tax revenue supervisor, "I feel like doing a (expletive) drive-by."

"There was no mention of shooting," Morris said. He said he meant to drive by to "flip them a bird, the finger."

Morris said the dispute was over $181.44 in sales taxes he believes was wrongfully charged his custom pool cue business.

He said he sent a check for the taxes Saturday.

"I give up," he said. He said he hopes to set up a legal defense fund to fight the criminal charges, adding: "Pool cue orders would also help."

Sad thing these days GoOD people are really fed up with government....The things i am hearing 70 year olds ect saying is about that in your post...People are boiling with anger..
