I'm always fighting with my break. I squat whitey 1 out of 5? probably less? but usually my CB drifts sideways.
To make the wing ball in 9 ball, it often feels like I need to break from the rail, then cut the 1 a little "backwards" on the opposite side. When I do that, the wing ball goes, the 1 is moving towards the side... but the CB is also moving towards the side. Usually when I see pros struggle with scratching on the break, that's where they scratch.
In theory, I should just be able to move the CB a bit further off the rail and hit the same spot on the 1b as I do when I cut it. But it just doesn't work. The wing ball doesn't go.
So is it crazy to intentionally cut the ball?
Also, when breaking 8 and 10 ball, I don't get as much power and action as I want when I slow it down to the point where I can squat whitey. But I've developed a break (subconsciously) where I accept the fact that I'm gonna hit a bit off to the side and I just let it fly to the side rail and then back towards the middle. I rarely scratch or get stuck on the short rails this way.
I know this flies in the face of what we're taught and I don't want to give up on the idea of squatting the cue ball like a pro, but is this viable? Or should I completely ditch it even if it's working for me?
