Cut Shots

Is there a good drill for practicing different cut shots? I know I have a problem with my alignment, but I haven't been able to figure out how to fix it. The more pool I learn, the more I'm learning it doesn't matter if you can make banks and kicks if you can't make a cut shot from 7' away. I sometimes miss a shot like this by up to an entire diamond. The contact point I see in my preshot does not seem to be the same one I'm seeing when I'm down on the shot, so I was wondering if there are any good drills to practice to engrain the different visuals into my head.

What I personally do from time to time to re-cultivate my aiming is to get another cue ball to act as the ghost ball and line up shots accordingly. It does wonders for me.

With out help from a qualified Instructor, many people throw CTE out the window.

I'm sure you realize that "contact" & "aim" points are two different things! One can not aim at a contact point and achieve their desired results.

Hopefully we can spend some time together this Summer.

Do you golf?

I spend the vast majority of my summer on the golf course. :)

Aiming

First find an aiming system that you are comfortable with. I prefer ghost ball and I teach ghost ball to most players.

Second make sure your approach and allignment are dead on.

If you get the 1st and the 2nd right then the rest comes easily.

Is there a reason the line of the shot looks so much different when I am standing behind it during my preshot routine then when I am down in my bridge shooting. It feels like even though I know where I want to delive the cue ball, it doesn't feel like I am aiming at the same ghost ball that I was when I was standing...I dont know if that makes any sense...

Yes, there is a reason. When you are above the shot, your are working in 3 demensions, when you are at table height, it becomes two demensional. You have to make your decision while you are standing, verify it when your bridge hand hits the table, while you are still just mid way down, and then trust what you saw. The worst thing you can do is adjust your aiming when you are down on the shot. You lose your depth perception down there. If you are really uncomfortable, you can raise back up to mid point and re-verify.

In my opinion I would make sure your fundamentals are solid for long straight in shots. If you can make them 98.72% of the time then I'd say it's not your alignment.

If you are very inconsistant with long straight in shots then I'd see a certified instructor to get your fundamentals worked out.

Your aiming is done with the body alignment and not when your down on the shot. If you can shoot straight then you just need to find an aiming system that helps you see the short cut shots. If you get the short cut shots down then the longer ones are the same aiming method.

I take 12 balls and place them about 1 inch off the long rail diamonds. I shoot them in the corners from only the foot spot or the head spot. After I can make all 12, I put the balls in the same position only frozen to the rail.

If you can shoot these shots, you can make most any cut shot.

Oh yea.... I use the PTBINP aiming system. (put the ball in the pocket) I don't obsess, dissect, or scrutinize it, I just shoot by instinct. Let your mind go blank (easy for some) and let your brain shoot the ball. PRACTICE
