Hi all,

A good day to all of you. Would like to check what tool is needed for cutting of phenolic tips on a DIY lathe? I use a blade to trim the leather cue tips but for phenolic, I doubt a blade is able to I guess?

I use a utility knife / box cutter blade and it works just fine....

But phenolic is so hard, the blade wouldn't give way? You're talking about pen knife kind of blade or a special blade that is meant for it?

The olfa knife with a black blade
Same as I use in all my tip jobs.
I use the lathe tools to get it trimmed close first

Leave it to someone who has a real lathe.
A HSS parting tool then a blade ought to do it.

I use a Taig radius cutting jig and an HSS cutter, works just fine.

A HSS cutter from a packet of lathe tools I believe? I have that at home. I'm wondering do you all build a small stand to rest the tool and your hands to act as support or hold the tool and place it at the tip?

No, I can't imagine hand-holding a sharp blade and cutting/shaping phenolic - I have a lathe and the jig mounts on the cross-slide.

Do correct me if I'm wrong, seems to me your tool is just a gauge for the shape?

Yes. I was addressing your blade stability issues you brought up.
I do have a auto tip shaper also, but I prefer the blade and rest.

Let's say I don't have a bed for my setup, mine's just a drill and 2 holder, will the rest of your auto tip shaper work? Its a flat surface?
