> I bought a one-off variation of his Speedster model for 130.00 with 2 shafts from a friend that bought it at a tournament. It had been well-used but not abused. It was a VERY nice piece of curly maple,4 ebony points into an ebony butt much like a SP,but with a nice ebony/silver/maple ring set at the bottom of the points and above the butt cap. It had a fairly large ivory-looking diamond in each point, and 4 large inlays above the butt. The joint was a typical Perry mainstay, thinwalled SS collar over phenolic and wood, flatfaced with the Radial pin. The joint wasn't all that tight for a Radial, but much nicer than a brand-new McDermott. Shafts were nice and straight, clear grained but not the dead-white stuff. The ferrules were something close to LBM,and VERY clean.
For 130.00,that was the best looking and best hitting cue I've personally ever seen for that amount of money. Overall, the quality was quite good.
The ONLY problem I found with this cue was the SS joint collar was loose when I got it. These thin-walled joint collars are not threaded on,the cue had went from hot to cold and vice versa a bunch of times, and it suffered a glue failure.
I can't blame anyone but the previous owners for that. Even if a cue is not slammed around by the owner, leaving it out in your vehicle can cause ANY cue to suffer the same kind of failure, regardless of who made it.
I fixed it,and could not believe how good it played for what I paid for it. I sold it a few weeks later for 275.00.
There are reports of him having quality control issues, and spotty customer service. Some knock him for his Ebay deals and what his business model has done to guys that once bought high-end cues from him. I can't call myself a member of either of those groups.
My honest assessment is for what he charges for a basic cue from his Ebay store, you probably won't find a better cue in that price range. Tommy D.
