Dallas Area?

I'm going to be in Dallas for a week with wheels and a lot of time to kill if things go well. I know I have to locate the new Diamond Billiards but what are the other places I need to get to? I want to find nine footers and snooker tables. How about the best bar-be-cue and the best steak to be had?

I do know that Dallas/Fort Worth takes in a lot of territory and I'm not sure what part of Dallas I'll be staying in since I am just along for the ride with someone else but with wheels and time to prowl I may find myself almost anywhere in the area. I do like the nearby towns and outskirts a bit more than the middle of the city. Took my eighteen wheeler through Dallas a double handful of times and through Dallas/Fort Worth once! Four hours to drive fifty miles broke me of sucking eggs. I hate bumper to bumper stop and go traffic. Bumper to bumper at 75 on the belt suits me a little better!

I don't know much about the Dallas pool scene, but I am very anxious to hear more about this Diamond pool room. Please do report back with as much info to let us inquiring minds back home get a taste of what's happening.

Isn't Rodney living in Texas now? I'm not sure where. Then some other prominent Texan players would be Charlie Bryant, Silver Ocoa (sp), C.J. Wiley, and Jeremy Jones. I'm not sure where they live in Texas, though.

P.S. When I was 19 years old, the one and only time I ever flew on an airplane was to Dallas/Fort Worth at Love Airport on Braniff Airlines. NEVER AGAIN have I flown in an airplane since this one experience. The only thing I can remember about Richardson, Texas (outside of Dallas) is that everything was flat, and I didn't see any mature trees like we have back here at home. They had MANY facilities for the youth there, though, which I thought was a bonus for extracurricular activities like softball, soccer, et cetera. Back then, everything was new-looking and clean, but no mature trees!

Many of those were mature trees I suspect! My ex was from Texas and I ragged her mightily about the comparative shortage of trees and lakes in Texas. Trees don't grow very tall in much of Texas. Met a lot of good folks over there and some parts of Texas are beautiful though.

I'm actually headed that way on the sixth or seventh but figured I had better gather some information early. I will report back on the new place and wherever else I find noteworthy.

Bob's Steak and Chop house for the best steak in Dallas. You'll need reservations (and it's quite pricey - but you get what you pay for)

To the best of my knowledge, there are no 12 foot snooker tables nearby with any action (or players for that matter). There is one 10' at Dave & Busters.

DFW Pool scene

Diamonds is by far the best "players" pool hall in the area---set up for the player by players. They have 8 9' Diamond pro tables with the Diamond lights ( all are ball return) and 1 7' Diamond bar box, all covered in light blue Simonis cloth. There is plenty of room between the tables and a raised viewing area to watch your favorite match from. The music volume is kept quite low, rest rooms are clean and it is a no smoking room. Now the best part, it cost $6.00/hr for the table. At this time they only have soft drinks and snacks, not sure what there future plans are in this area.
Did I mention that they don't have shuffle boards, no video games and no darts----this is a pool hall for the pool player----period!!!!

The other spot to visit is the Billiards Den which does have a snooker table and is a great room also, check them both out and pm me, as I maybe able to hook up with you guys one night.

Appreciate the information. I'll PM you my schedule and contact info later this week too. I don't know how much computer access I will have on the road. The laptop I have access to is somebody else's company machine and silly as it sounds to many, some of the avatars may keep me from visiting this site. Some companies are super PC and cheesecake may be too much.

Dallas Area

I haven't been to Diamonds, but just by the way it has been set up....I'm sure it is the best. They have the best equipment and they cater to the player, not the recreational drinker. The Billiards Den is a little bit different. They have 4-5 9' tables, and 8-10 8' tables. I do believe they have a 10' snooker table also. They do have 3 or so bar boxes as well. All of the tables, besides the bar boxes, are custom made. They actually have the Texas State Quarters as the rail sights/markers. They do have a full kitchen and bar which can cook anything from hamburgers to steaks, however, I haven't eaten there. This is where they are holding the Viking Tour stops in the area. It is in Richardson, Tx. They will charge $10-12 an hour though. CJ Wiley has a room here as well which is supposed to be pretty good too, but I don't know too much about it. The website seems to just want to advertise for their Hawaiian Tropic Pageant thing that they put on....go figure, haha. Anyway, you can always find a game at pretty much any place, so I hope you find what you are looking for!

As far as I'm concerned, I prefer pool rooms that DO NOT sell alcohol.

Of course, there is one school of thought that in order for a billiard parlor proprietor to make a profit, the alcohol sales, being as lucrative as they are, should be a key component.

When I was younger, I always wanted to go to the bars to play pool because there was a lot of action in the bars. However, most serious-minded pool players I knew durnig this era, the ones who hung out in the pool rooms, desired to gamble in pool rooms and not bars. They figured the alcohol drinkers sometimes get rowdy when playing pool, especially when they lose.

The BEST pool rooms I have ever been to did not serve alcohol. Rather, they have quite a different atmosphere, one that is conducive to railbirds and pool enthusiasts and not alcohol drinkers and sports TV screamers. They serve good food, FRESH coffee, and other beverages. There is usually a group of "regulars" who frequent these type of pool rooms, and it's almost like a clubhouse where you can go hang out with your friends.

Shooting Arts, I hope you do visit Diamonds. I am anxious to learn your take on the joint! You can be our inside AzBilliards roving reporter. Hey, restaurants have undercover roving review writers, and so should the pool rooms! :p

I am going to borrow a pocket camera for this little expedition but no idea of the results I will get. Having SLR's and DSLR's handy for years that is all I know how to use however they are a bit bulky and I won't be toting camera gear this trip. Hopefully I will be able to take a few pictures with the pocket camera without causing a fuss. The first thing I hear when I tote the DSLR is "Who are you shooting for?" Inconspicuous it ain't!

I like the clubhouse type pool halls far better myself. With or without alcohol people rarely make asses out of themselves. Add a high ceiling or a nonsmoking room and I am a happy camper. I hate smelling like a neglected ashtray when I leave a place plus I am somewhat allergic to cigarette smoke.

I consider these "real" pool halls and I can step into one from coast to coast and be at home.
