Dan Louie

gulfportdoc,

Sorry, I don't know what his situation is now, I haven't seen him in 15 yrs. Dave is a great guy, I spent many many hours playing him. I concidered him a buddy but like many top players his personal life was never what you could say 'smooth'.

You are correct about his game when he had it going on, it was just flawless and it could go on for hours, just ask my billfold...LOL

rhodes and geiler Tom Rossi Story.

Ya, that kick shot is great with his heel. I played with Dave rhodes about 4 months ago in portland, well I was playing glenn atwell getting my ass kicked getting the 7 out. And rhodes was playing my buddy in golf and taking alot of money off my friend. So rhodes is still around you can catch him every so often at classics in portland. Anyone ever hear of or play a good northwest player named Tom Rossi, out of salem, OR. He got me started in pool, great player doesnt really compete much anymore.

One time rhodes and gieler where playing some money sets, and rhodes beat geiler. After winning rhodes started running his mouth and gieler got mad and said David lets play for ffffiivvee fffive five fffiiiivvee five thousand dollars. Rich stutters, and said 5 5 times.....so rhodes knowing rich only wanted to play for 5 thousand looked at Rich and said. "Rich im not going to play you for 25 thousand dollars are you crazy"?

Kick shot? What's the kick shot?

Rich stands at one corner of the table and with bottom of the heel on his shoe kicks the cue ball three rails and knocks in the object ball at the opposite corner he is standing. He is deadly at it and even adds running English.

Thanks, guys!! Lunchmoney, I sure hope you stop by and say hello (I must have missed you at the Breaking Point last year). UWPoolGod1, it's not such a long way, only about an hour and a half. You should reconsider, sounds like there will be tons of great matches - besides, it'll be fun hanging out with all the champions that are going to be there!!! :)

A friend of mine was talking with Harry Platis yesterday and Harry told him that the Breaking Point was closed although he didn't know why. Is this true? Has it closed? If so, anyone know why?

That is very sad news - the Breaking Point is without doubt the most beautiful room in the area!! And it's a sentimental room for me, too, because when it opened as Mr. Z's back in 1994 I was the house pro. Let's hope that it's just undergoing some remodeling or something.... :( I will ask about that this weekend.

Thanks Kerry, I'll do the same and let you know if I hear anything. Like you, I hope any closure is only temporary.

Thanks for the update Paul. Shari and Kevin are good people, they are both very good players. Yeah I heard that Platis asked my Vancouver friend Ron "Jackson" Jackson if he wanted to go in with him on buying The Breaking Point. However Jackson is going to be opening a poolhall down here in Vancouver when he gets up enough money. Already has most of his pool tables purchased when he was in Vegas in November. Found a nice spot but needed a partner himself for al the expenses.

Thank you for the update on Jackson. I heard from him around Christmas and he was working on getting a room. Tell him hi when you see him and to keep me posted if he has time.

Hey Jack-
Jackson left early this month for a few months to Australia for some exhibitions and see his son I believe. When he gets back he will hopefully putting the room together. We can only pray...9 footers in Vancouver...would be a godsend.

Breaking Point was closed due to financial issues. I just heard last night that new ownership will be Shari and Kevin Ross.

Thanks for the info, good news that it will remain a pool hall. Any word on when it will re-open?

No idea when it will reopen. I'll go ahead and post it when I find out, assuming no one else has.

Will you be going to watch the scotch double tournament?

Cheers,
Richard

Dan is one of the nicest guys a person could ever meet. Watching him play pool on the other hand is about as painful as stabbing yourself in the eye with a ball point pen over and over. Despite his super slow play and high tech approach that lacks in rythm in the extreme even up to the mid 90's he was the best player in the Northwest, including Canada across BC, Alberta, Sask, and Manitoba. The guy was the top buy in the Calcutta every time. A huge event in about 1995 or 96 brought in Pagulayan, Gollan, Mikkelsen, Potier, Horsefall, Frenchy, and tons of other top players from across Canada to the Great White in Calgary and the top buy in the Calcutta by quite alot was Dan, and then he won the damn tourney beating Potier in the finals pretty badly, a late charge by Potier of about a 4 or 5 pack made the score only mildy respectable. Dan was awesome once.

Hi Richard...

You bet! There should be some good matches going on. I'll be dropping by there today around 4.

Are you in the area? Are you going to watch?

Thank you for asking. I dont think I can make it out there today. I was thinking about going to show my support for Hsin Huang and Mike Vidas, and also to say hi to Danny...and you. But I am very tied up here at this moment unfortunately.
Have fun...may be you can show us some pictures afterwards?

Doh... I don't have a camera.

The match started at around 9am and it was still going on when I left at 9pm. Dan Louie and Tiffany Taylor won their first two matches, then proceeded to wait 4 to 5 hours for their next match. When I left, they were still waiting.

Mike Vidas and Hsin Huang were playing a set when I walked in the door. I don't remember who their opponents were but Vidas/Huang won.

I believe Stan Tour. and Company beat Richie Geiler and Company. Stan also beat Raul A. and Company. The latter set was a good match, hill-hill. Unfortunately as Raul sank the 9, the CB also went in.

Kerrie Impson and her husband won some matches, including one against Kim Jones and Mike Stevens. (Kim recently took first place in 3 events down in Lincoln City last weekend.)

Well, sounds like you have had a lot of fun. I wish I were there. Thank you for the updates.

Take care,

Richard

He was at the U.S. Bar Table Championships in Reno last week. He hasn't been playing that much, but is still very competitive. He stays busy running the family restaurant in Seattle.

Has anyone heard what Dan Louie is up to lately? He's such a fine player from the Seattle area. I wonder if he's retired from tournament and/or back room action?

Paul,

My friend Hsin and Mike is in the finals in the scotch double. I have not heard from her yet. Have you heard anything?

Thank you very much.

PS. I miss your photo shop art, are you going to surprise us any time soon?

Yeah, Dan and Tiffany both called me; they got third place. When they left the place, Vidas/Huang were up 4-1 over Eddie Mataya and Cindy something.

I need to correct myself: Earlier I said Stan Tour. beat Richie Geiler. That is not the case. Apparently, Richie had that match won since he was playing today as well.

Mike Zimmerman and Linda Carter got 4th.

Kerrie Impson and Mark got 5th/6th.

Mike Shannon and Shari Ross also ended up in 5th/6th.

Heh. Unfortunately, I've been pretty busy with work the last month or so. But I've been messing around with a pool magazine cover featuring Britney Spears on the front. I just need to find a picture of a complete cue in a magazine somewhere and scan it in.

I used to have a Britney Spears on TIME magazine.

But if someone were to provide a full-size picture of themselves (Landshark!), then I could do some more covers.

Also, I don't know if I posted it here or not, but check out http://www.insidepool.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=questions&Number=11286&Forum=All_Forums&Words=paulalex7000&Match=Entire%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=1year&Main=11215&Search=true#Post11286

I was at Shotzes for a while in Saturday. It was a pleasure to meet and talk with Kerry Impson. I watched one of her and her husbands matches and they played top notch. I wished I had known there were other posters from this board were there at the same time. The talent in that tourney was definitely a who's who of Pacific Northwest pool players.

Hi, lunchmoney! It was nice meeting you as well, and seeing PaulAlex7000 again (but I don't think you guys were there at the same time). I definitely agree, it was a Who's Who of NW players - there were so many tough teams! And we sure had a lot of fun. Our match with Hsin and Mike was a pretty exciting one, with neither team able to get much of a lead (unfortunately quite a few errors were committed by both sides) - until at 6-6 in the race to 8 they broke and ran the set on us!! Then Dan Louie and Tiffany played PERFECT against us to knock us out - our opportunities were few and far between, and we failed to capitalize on most of them.

Anyway, we had so much fun playing together, and hopefully we'll do better next year - we can hardly wait!! :)

Was Jeff Boucher (Boushay) there? He seems to win anything he plays in - in Montana, Idaho, and Spokane. He has played in a few major tournaments and done well. Talked to him a couple weeks ago. So its not that far to Seattle - these guys here don't think twice about traveling 400-500 miles over the weekend to play - then back to work on Monday.
