To be honest...I've never heard of the guy, but he seems quite confident. Poster's around Subic bay. He say's he'll take on all comers. Does he know it's the PI?

4 Shot start, carry on rule, whatever that is? What game? 20 Euros a game.

Maybe this guy doesn't understand Pinoy's don't spend Euros? Or even have a clue what the value of a "Euro" is??? Let's talk Peso's.

He bill's himself as a trick-shot artist as well.

I believe he's Irish. When he was in Bangkok a few years ago, you had 3 attempts to clear the table for 1000 baht ($30).

I'd imagine it's 8 ball. The carry on rule is 'two shots carry', which is common in English 8 Ball. After a foul you get two visits, regardless of whether you make the first ball or not. His tactic will be to let the opponent use 4 visits to clear all the blocking balls, then play for as many snookers as he needs to ensure a victory. The two shot carries rule loads the dice in favour of the defending player, and adds pressure to the attacker to finish within his alloted visits. Some variants of the game don't require you to hit a cushion or pot a ball after contact, so easy roll-up snookers often result in two shots for your opponent. It is also common to pick up the CB after a foul and place it anywhere behind the head string. Give a foul to a good player and you've lost with those rules.

I used to play a chap that was a friend of his, and played with him often. My mate was a very limited player, but extremely difficult to beat. He could point n poke as well as anyone, but had very little mastery over the CB. He turned my game to trash for about 6 months and i don't know why. He had a presence, an aura, that made people miss the easiest of shots. I suspect jelly baby has a technique for making people miss, but I don't know what.

Whatever, he clearly makes an easy living from offering what looks like absurdly good odds.

Wow! I actually have to spread the green around more before hitting you again! I must really like dry sarcasm!

Seriously though...good post! Interesting spot!

David Holt aka 'Jelly Baby' was the UK's #1 for over 5 years ina a career that earned him over 20 national and championship titles.....David will demonstrate his amazing reportoire of trick shots and pool skills and is opening the table to challengers!!.....4 shot head start for the men and a 50 shot start for the ladies....feeling lucky??

Just found this - he offers a FIFTY shot start to women! We all know women are hopeless at pool, but 50 shots is some spot...

Jelly Belly and his game

I apologize for catching up to this thread a couple of months behind the times but I thought Jelly Belly might still be in the Philippines and another note might be of interest.

I put a section on Jelly Belly in my book on the pool world in Bangkok, "Bangkok Pool Blues."

It's not really a scam but he is playing a smart small money ($30 or so) game. It's as described by some of the contributors a four start for his opponent, a "two carry" as the Brits say for Jelly Belly when he gets to the table. It's important to realize that he avoids good handicap players by sticking to small bars, not usually the competitive pool halls. He goes at night when most of the crowd have been drinking and posts his challenge. Jelly Belly uses a snooker cue and only drinks water. He gets a lot of below par players to sign up and when he gets beat by the occasional good player that guy has to go to the bottom of the list to get his next chance. Even if he loses to a few good players at the end of the night he has had enough average players to come out ahead.

He did try one of the good pool halls in Bangkok one night, "Players" and got his rear end kicked. After losing three matches in a row to high handicap players he packed up and went home. He was never competitive in tournaments. He pots balls really well and has good control of the cue ball but like many snooker players who come to the pool table he doesn't manage the table in 9 ball as well as he should.

Again scam is too strong a word but he does know what he is doing and the big audience of average and below average players pay his rent.
