De Er Le Cup Chinese 8-Ball World Championship?

that was the BEST pool tourney I think in YEARS

incredible, the field and the level of professionalism, rules, ref, dress, etc........

IPT had this level of excellence and we've had nothing since in the pool world

I don't really care that it's "chinese 8 ball", i LOVE It

consider me converted, and I'm thinking of buying one of these tables too

But wait, where are all the people saying a pool player would have no chance and would be terribly out classed in such an event. Crickets, I hear crickets.

I seem to recall most people saying the snooker players would have no chance??

In his first couple of events, I rated him highly as he's a similar background to Potts.

I began to suspect that too much playing on US tables may have effected his aiming for tight pockets, but I never wrote Daz off. He's a fighter and has a good balance of skill for this type of challenge!

If a US pool only player won this, without the tight pocket and 8-ball background won it, that would surprise me.

It says a lot for the quality of snooker players, that 2 off them, albeit with 8-ball backgrounds, who have hardly ever hit 2.25"balls were dangerously close to taking this title.

And notice how Alex Pagulayan dominated Derby City after some time practicing this Chinese 8-ball format? Seems the US pockets looked impossible to miss after playing that game for a week.

A bit more recently than that, but yeah, wow, you claimed him as your own. Well done.

Good to see the brits dominating yet another cue sport discipline final. ;)

Maybe we just eat more carrots?

Could be, but it's more likely because we can cue straight and don't fill our heads with nonsense like aiming systems.

I think it's the discipline. Foreign players play a totally different style than the american players and that's why they don't favor well in those type of format/events. Snooker and foreign 8 balls player all play basic pool with less flare with Ronnie being the exception, once i realize where he was he became a real showman.

The Philippines are the X-Men of pool so they don't count, kind of like your Keith McCready

i believe in learning and evolution and consequently dumping the pool size pockets

of almost all games worldwide...snooker, chinese 8 ball, russian pyramids, english billiards, uk 8 ball, etc..............only american pool has the bucket size pockets, ez not to miss and also allow you to essentially keep it in the jaws when u do miss

love how those snooker corner pockets can spit that ball out anywhere on the table, serious punishment for missed balls

i've even come to terms with non-simonis

I swear, if i hear one more bloody mention of keith mccready on this site...

you did what?

Way to go Darren! Sounds like it was a great match to watch.

It was a good match, depending on the like you were using, but if you have seen any of those matches going back to the qualifier before then I hard to say you missed anything you haven't seen before. The nice thing I have noticed from the few years of watching this is that the level and quality of play is so high that it's very consistent, tons of BnR's flawless form and the kicker... these guys pace is not off my favorite player Ralf's pace, yet pace is not something that i've seen anyone talk about while watching these matches.

I'm sure genipool or bilijar will have it on youtube in the next 48 or so. The real excitement came when the match tied up at 18-18, I won't spoil it for you and tell you who won.

Why did the poolplayer show up late to the Chinese 8-ball tournament?

Because it was a De Er Le.

(Sorry, had to do it...)

I watched a number of the matches from the World Chinese 8-Ball Masters event in January. Here are some stats (e.g., 49% B&R!) and discussion from that event: http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=386746

For this just-ended event, I looked in a couple times, but did not watch any matches from start to end. I was glued to the screen for 9 days watching the DCC, and trying to also follow the C8B event closely was too much. But if this Daz/Selby final is available for viewing later, I'll watch it.

Now -- how about that first prize! If it was 600,000 RMB, I think that converts to about $96,000 now. Other than the big prizes in the IPT, where does this prize rank in the list of all-time biggest? I think Efren won over $160,000 in a Tokyo 9-Ball event in 2001. Of course, snooker has had many big prizes. But how about pool? Where does this $96,000 rank?

This is bigger and higher quality play than the C8B Masters in early Jan.Plus it also had a women's divison, is well organised and had bigger higher quality field of top players including number of top snooker players (not retired old Hendry like in C8ball Masters)
Though what I liked about the C8B Masters is they have the time limit of 130 minutes or so per match which speed things up.
Besides the final, you should also watch the exciting hill hill last 16 matches Neil Robertson v Yang Fan and Mark Selby v Chris Meiling.
The matches (part of them anyway) I have watched have been very entertaining, high quality play. No easy run out and more tactical play.

The men;s division has total prize fund about $300K which is less than prizefund of the 1st World 10Ball some years ago also won by Darren. The upcoming Manny Pacquiao World 10 Ball later this month may match this.
At least now we more or less will have these 2 big events every year with $100K winners purse

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll make a note to try to watch those.

From the AzB records, it looks like the purse for the 2008 World 10-Ball was $400,000, with Darren taking $100,000 of that with his win. In 2009 and 2011, the only other years the WPA World 10-Ball was played, first-place was $60,000. As to the upcoming one in the Philippines, I hope you are right that it's not a one-time affair. [And I sure wish SVB was playing in it!]

So, for big single-event pool wins (other than IPT), we have:

2001 -- Efren Reyes, Tokyo 9-Ball, $163,172
2008 -- Darren Appleton, World 10-Ball, $100,000
2015 -- Darren Appleton, China Pool World Championship, $96,000 (approx.)

Any more?

2006 - Ronnie Alcano
2007 - Daryl Peach - both 9-Ball World Championship in Manila, $100,000
