decipher double j match commentary pls

It seems there is consensus that JJs comment implies the outcome of a softer hit letting the OB naturally roll easily into a more accepting pocket. I think we all know a firm hit can jaw up balls where a softer hit would have dropped.

At this point it seems the debate is on the phrase “overspin on the object ball” and whether that means...

A) It’s a weird way to describe a naturally rolling object ball...OR

B) He misspoke and meant to say “overspin on the cueball”, because he was describing getting some force follow (overspin) out of a soft stroke resulting in good action AND a naturally rolling cueball.

Unless I’m misreading things and I’m unawares.

I think he was talking about the CB and MW also knew that.

Sometimes, on the fly doing commentary, there can be a disconnect between what you mean to say and what actually comes out of your mouth.

...even if he blasted it, from that distance it would still probably be "fully rolling."
You may be right that he was talking about the CB, not the OB, but I disagree with the above statement. Especially on new cloth, that OB doesn't have to be hit all that crazy hard to have less than full forward roll on it at the pocket.

P.S. And he said it "opened the pocket up"...

School me, Jay.

Here's your explanation:

So, a few things:

First, of course the OB is rolling smoothly towards the pocket with forward spin, duh.

Second, even if the ball hopped a little, on that shot, at that distance from the pocket, so what? After it hopped around the second diamond and rolled the rest of the table, it's still going to be rolling.

Third, guess what? He did hit it off line and hits the rail at least half a diamond in front of the pocket.

So fourth, hitting the rail before the pocket means that the OB will have rail induced spin on it and will not be rolling with pure forward spin.

So again, explain it to me.

I like the way JJ said it. I don't care for the commentators who like to give lengthy dissertations that focus on their own expertise or lack thereof. A very good sportscaster gave me some great advice a long time ago - "keep it short and sweet!" SUCCINCT should be the magic word when doing commentary and some can and some can't.

As for you Lou, I can only say, you don't know what you don't know, and leave it at that.

Maybe by over spin he was simply saying that it was rolling or didnt have any side spin. Doing live commentary I would imagine that you need to turn thoughts into words very quickly, sometimes new words are created when the correct word escapes you, the comment is only relevant for a short period of time before the viewer is watching the next shot or listening to the other half of the commentary duo. Just sayin is all.

I just think he misspoke.

IOWs, you know you can't get out of the corner you've painted yourself into, lol.

I would certainly agree with this.

Thank God we never have to listen to you commentate.
I'd get sick to my stomach.

OK, so help me understand.

What superpower was Sky using -- given the distance between the CB and OB and between the OB and pocket on this particular shot -- that helped the two ball drop. (That would be: other than missing the pocket by at least half a diamond.)

"object ball always has good overspin..very rarely a punchy kind of ball"

I'm sure this is a neat comment..I just vaguely understand it ^_^
thanks for any help!

First of all, I have no idea what I'm taking a photo or video of at that moment.

Secondly, I love that Jeremy said, "a little top English" at 1:00:30. All the "top English" haters can cringe in their panties.

I also love that JJ pronounced Dennis Orcullo as or COO yo. It's closer to correct than most, and at least he's got the fact that there's a 'u' in Dennis's name. It's close to or COOL yo

------------------------------

That all being said, Jeremy teaches a stroke and speed of an object ball that he believes makes ball pocketing easier... with a wider margin of error. Whether the physics is right or the explanation is right is a total a different question. I think a lot of us can understand what he's getting at, albeit esoterically.

You will hear Jeremy talk about the sound of the balls when you hit it well "with a good pop" and that it has "good overspin" to help get it in the pocket. In his teaching, it's similar to when Ronnie O'Sullivan says that the key to good potting for him is "good cueing action."

Thanks for being a fan.

I've commented a few times, even once with Jay. Had to help him out but he did OK.

sorry you missed it :-)

I call that section of table the funnel. This zone diminishes considerably as cloth wears and/or pocket apertures diminish and/or facings gunk up. Most of us don't have access to eternally pristine conditions so I do question the wisdom of habitually relying on the funnel.

I'd like to see/hear that - is it recorded anywhere?

Don't know -- I believe it was a TAR broadcast from the 2012 US One Pocket Open, Shane v JJ.

One year I did another US One Pocket Open match commentary with Larry Schwartz from your neck of the woods. I've also done a 14.1 match with George Fels, some 1pocket with JoeyA and a few others.

I play on a table with no funnel -- zero, zippo, nada.

It's incredibly frustrating but has made my ball pocketing considerably more accurate. So basically I agree with you. If you become accustomed to sliding balls in it's eventually gonna bite you.
