deer antler

antlers

This Is such a small deal, .
A friend sent me a deer antler .

And I need to make sure Its not going to shrink on me .
The antler is less than a year old .
And I am just learning.

Is the marrow of the antler dark or white/grayish? If it was a shed it should be white/grayish, if it was a kill, it will be dark, like purplish/red based on my little experiences.

The antler was just shipped to me and I don't have it yet.
As soon as I get it I will cut it ,photograph it , and post a picture of the antler.
The person that shipped the antler doesn't know how old it is either , it was given to him and he didn't think to ask about how old the antler is.
Should be here in a few days.
I will do my best to keep you guys updated on this

:) I have worked with elk antler for ferrules and butt caps. Turned out pretty nice just smelled crappy while turning pieces. Was told by the hunter that the antlers needed to cure for around 5 years to minimize splitting or cracking. Don't know how accurate the 5 year suggestion was but the pieces I was working on did not split on me. I have a set of deer sheds that I have not worked with yet, maybe today. I think they are about 3 years old.
Finding the center on each end before turning is a must. Just a suggestion.

finished

Most of this year I was in the hospital or recovering from the operations.

So I just now got the antler project finished.

2nd and 4th chalkers have or are made with deer antler.

Out of a rack of White tail deer antler i only get 5-10 useable ferrules......Throw out all the ones with Pith exposed on the sidewall.

1. I cut mine into round blanks immediently (1"X.15-18mm OD).........Let them sit for a month or so.....

2. Bore them to .312 let them sit for a couple days...

3. Install on .312 tenon and cut the ferrule oversized by a couple thousandths (say .030)....let the cue sit for a day...If pith starts to show cut it off and restart.....

*****as it cools it will shrink

4. Come back to the cue the next day and see if the Antler ferrule shrunk past the wood. If it did, start over.....

If it didnt shrink past the wood, cut it to size and polish lightly (NO HEAT) wait another day and see if it shrunk past the wood.....if it didnt, tip it and give it to customer......
