Greetings fellow players,

I know this is ultimately a personal decision but wanted to get other thoughts. My 5 year old table has Billiard Factory’s premium cloth. It has lots of chalk and burn spots that I can’t get out. See pic attached. I’ve brushed it, vacuumed it using a horse hair brush attachment and even tried rubbing it with some wet scrap table cloth leftover from installation. I’d like to eventually upgrade to Simonis 860HR. I’m already using Aramith balls. Should I go ahead and replace soon or wear it out some more? The local pool halls like Slick Willies let their cloths get FAR more worn out before replacing.

Nothing as nice as new cloth, if you prioritize your pool and if you can afford it. It’s obvious from your wear / burn marks that you have racked the balls at both ends of the table.

No, there is no way to remove the burn marks or the breaking tracks from your cloth. When/if you do get new cloth, preferably Simonis 860HR, I would strongly recommend using a break pad when breaking. It won’t eliminate the break tracks, but it will eliminate the burn marks where you break from.

I got nearly 10 years out of Simonis 760 on my 8-footer.
In the end, the whole surface looked pretty much like your break zone's pock marks.
When I took the cloth off (to tear the house down) the cloth was more like cardboard than fabric.

I replace cloth when holes start developing (or the house it was standing in is torn down)
Now, once the new house is finished (10 months late on a 12 month build) and the city signs off on it, the table will return from storage.

if you can afford to buy new cloth why on earth would you play on that?

do you wear your shoes till your toes show through. no

do you drive till your tires wear through the threads. no

you probably dont use 50 cents worth of cloth up in a days playing.

It's totally up to you. If it still plays ok keep playing on it. If it bothers you, you have the cash, you have a good mechanic ....sure why not. If you think the rails are going do everything together.

Well, at my Tavern, as soon as a burn mark shows, everyone will start demanding new cloth. They'd lynch you if they had to play on that. There's just no pleasing an APA 3. Brian.

If you haven't learned to use a jump cue and want to do so, I recommend doing it on that old cloth before you recover your table. I got almost 15 years of use from my Brunswick Centennial cloth before I changed it out for Simonis 860. However, it looked a lot worse than your cloth does.

I really like the Shark Skin ones that Outsville puts out. They aren't very expensive and each one lasts a long time. They are thin enough to not change the break.

I have had regular 860 Tournament Blue (not HR) on my GC4 since 2012. It looks about 20 times better than your cloth. However, I only break when playing the ghost, and most of my other practice is just randomly throwing balls on the table and trying to run out. I'm not familiar with the brand you have on your table, but it does look like a replacement is due to me.

I am a perfectionist and will only play on the best there is , or I wont play at all! I know I'm weird , but I've been around this game since 1960 and I won't waste my time ( the little I have left ) playing on junk. I don't think I have ever had cloth more than a year before I replaced it. Now I do my own recovering so it only costs me for the cloth, but its not hard to learn how to cover your own table. Anyway I have an 8 foot Brunswick with Simonis 860 and Centennial balls. I had a nine foot GGI but it overpowered the living room so I sold it on ebay. I'd love to share some pictures with ya"ll, but I don't know how to post those! So enjoy the game, it is great, no matter how you play it. A side note, I'm really very good too!

Just from your picture, the cloth looks OK and probably plays fair even now. That said, if the burn spots are bothering you, you can "upgrade" to a light color like tournament blue or the Matchroom gray. They hid the white marks better. HR will last a long time, even with significant table time.
Most of the time home, replacing felt on a home table is not from wear, just boredom or wanting something new. Cloth lasts a LONG time.
