deliberate attention......

Well i was working today ......we were packing long boards outside....and we were walking across a narrow beam.......normally walking across a beam is difficult....what do u do ? you FOCUS on walking across the beam....but we had these long boards in our hands.....so we were focused on the boards not the beam.....and guess what? we walked flawlessly across the beam....our mind took care of it atomatically......

So i got an idea....could this idea be used on the pool table? What if i used deliberate attention to shoot pool....instead of focusing on my stroke or my stance or deliberately focusing on something that matters pool wise...like my head or my eyes...or whatever.....what if i get down on the shot and deliberately focus on something else.......like wiggling my big toe.....obviously my big toe has nothing to do with pool...but if i purposesfully focus on it.....it seems my subconsious would take care of the rest of the shot.......

so basically im taking my attention away from the things that my body already knows how to do?

what do ya think?

That's actually an advantage to an aiming system... u give the conscious something to chew on so it gets out your way....

Dead stroke, the zone, or whatever you call it is what you are doing. Basic hypnosis, focus is narrowed. Your subconscious knows the way and when it is in conflict with your conscious mind we have errors.

Quite similar to the techniques described in, "The Inner Game of Tennis" for quieting the ego (judgemental part of the mind).

I've also been experimenting with Tom Ross' article on, "Shooting Blind". I play better a lot of the time with my eyes closed if I'm too distracted.

Sounds like a good plan!
In tennis when I stop over-thinking it, I play better.
In pool, when I stop thinking about it, the CB flies all over the place :(

So I would just add that if your subscontious mind already knows how to play good pool, then by all means let it take over. But if it doesnt, this plan might not work.

Heck with the boards if anythings falling it sure in the heck aint going to be me and when playing pool you should be focusing on pool.(how u going to teach the mind recall stuff on its own).I might try the toe thing though ..:D

Basically you are doing just that by focusing on the contact point on the object ball. It has a two fold purpose not only do you make the object ball but you are distracting your conscious mind from trying to help with your stroke motion as it is the sub-conscious part of the mind that is responsible for repetition of motion, once that motion has been learned. Letting your conscious mind get in on this is like having to many cooks in the kitchen.

I apologize, I misquoted the title; it is, "Flying Blind", from January 2009 in Billiards Digest. If you are unable to locate this, "drdave" on AZ has a link to purchase all of Tom's printed matter.

Not doing it right

Every time a hot girl walks by my focus ends up on her. But I always miss, so I must not be doing it right.

I have been trying to play with my head up my azz. That doesn't work.
Maybe I'll try wiggling my toes for a while. It's probably less painful. :D
