Dennis Hatch wants a job

good post

What's the big deal. The guy is looking for work. I guess a lot of you don't know that probably MOST world class athletes have to hold down full or part time jobs because their chosen sports don't pay the bills.

I think most olympians have careers and work outside of their sport.

As for using facebook to ask it's called networking. Where else is Dennis most likely to find work someone willing to employ him who understands his situation and a professional player than among his fans? For all you know there might be a couple millionaires who have work that is flexible in nature where they can plug in a person without much investment in specialized training.

very good points

Yeah, not really sure why this is a big deal. Pool does not pay well, he wants to begin earning some extra money... no diff if someone got downsized or took a pay cut to keep their current job. They too would be looking for another job, or at least a part time job to supplement their income.

As someone said, the money most pool players earned in their lifetime went to pay for housing, food, car payment, insurance, and travel expenses... and not a lot left over,,, but not a left over in MANY occupations either....

Most folks, in their mid 40's, who lost a job would need to keep working again even if they were making $100K a year or more unless they lived like Scrooge, driving 10 year old cars, living in the smallest house they could find, not eating out, not going on vacations, shopping at thrift stores, etc... it's nice for folks that do it,,, but certainly not much fun imho.

It's true that many a pool player does play poker in California. I think Amar Kang used to do this full-time, and a New England player named Ian (can't remember last name) also did this. They pay you to play poker in some poker venues, so the seats look full. Well, at least that's what I was told. Not sure if this is why.

Anyway, poker is *not* a sure income, but it does beat a blank. Not everybody can play poker well and have tells. You have to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em . . . :D

HIs name is Ian Costello, not sure if I spelled it right.

Where is Dennis located". I could use another Sales Rep at our Indianapolis location. Straight commission, the hours and structure are such that allow a flexible schedule.

....Yup....

I hope Dennis can find something that allows himself to pay his bills, stay in stroke and compete when and where he chooses. He may be one of the more controversial, electric figures out there, and that makes for good viewing IMO.

Why can't he work in a Casino?

Criminal record thats why. No different in any Casino in Canada.

Do you think that if for example, you had a previous Fraud charge, they would want you hanging around large amounts of money.

In Canada, there are certain Provinces where an employer can't discriminate against someone with a Record. Others it isn't.

If you live in one of those Provinces, your type of employment and earning potential is seriously limited until you have waited the allotted time and applied for a Pardon.

Then they can't discriminate.

I can sympathize a little... with a record it's going to be harder to find work.
Posting on FB to help your odds makes sense.

Personally, from what I've heard about the guy (both stuff he was convicted for,
and stuff he was never charged with) I'm not about to do him any favors.
Maybe he's a changed man. In that case, good luck to him.

Yep. When I first posted about him seeming to be a decent chap, I received a PM outlining why he wasn't such a decent chap.

I will take that one back. I wouldn't hire him to drive my taxi.

what he do then? you've gone on the web stating he's a person of ill repute because someone "pm'd" you?

Why does everyone scream whenever someone posts a PM that they received.
Thats what the P stands for. Private.

I posted that I thought he was a decent chap. Someone straightened me out.

Based on his own statement that he can't apply for work in a Casino because they do back ground checks. If you have clean record, you should have nothing to hide right.

His statement just confirmed for me what I was told. Nothing more, nothing less.

It would serve no purpose to relate publicly what I was told and by whom.

Myself, I'm satisfied with what I heard.

My post was just an admission that I wrong in my assumption that he was a decent person.

He probably still is a decent person. Just a decent person with a record that will limit his job possibilities.

I already said that I wouldn't hire him. I'll change that. I couldn't hire him as he would have to get a record check in order to drive a taxi.

I just own the taxi and I have to have a clean record in order to own the plate.

Are ya clear on that one now?

I thought there was 3 events the pros could play in besides the invitationals. Like the grand masters 8 ball or something like that. I thought Mark mentioned it in a pod cast.

Yes his name is Ian Costello. Was a very good pool player. And solid poker player as well. I played pool and poker with him in 1999-2000 when I lived in Vegas for a year and a half.
Also some casinos will pay players to play by the hour. But when doing this you are still gambling your own money while playing. Some/most call it a prop player.

i'll be honest, i got my current job honestly by being on facebook at the right time lol.. a friend of mine posted on fb that he was looking to hire two people.. and at the time i wasnt working so i asked him what was up.. and within two weeks i have the job that i have now and love it!! and i make more money now than i have in a long time!!!

when i was hiring, i rarely ever went to the resume collection unless someone had really stood out. Timing was everything. The next 'right guy' to walk through the door got the job usually.
