Dennis Wins - has this been done before?

Dennis wins the 2013 USBTC 10 Ball so currently Mr. Orcullo (or Orcollo, I have seen it both ways).. is the current:

US Open 10 Ball Champ
DCC Bigfoot 10 Ball Champ
2013 USBTC 10 Ball Champ

In 9-ball:

lost to Shane in the finals of the US Open 9 Ball...
2013 Swanee 9-Ball Champion

it appears this fellow plays at a pretty consistent level

With the USBTC win I also wonder if this is the first time anyone has held a title in the same discipline (this being 10 ball) on 3 different size tables in the same 12 month period (7, 9 and 10 ft)?

regardless of the rules, everyone is playing under the same conditions, you have to admit that this is a pretty good run given the strength of the fields ...

Not that my opinion matters for anything, but I think Dennis O. is the best poolplayer in the world right now. SVB is right up there among the world's best, but I'm sorry, I'd bet the house on Dennis if these two matched up (#1) If I was a gambling man, and #2) If they matched up more than ONCE, say maybe in a series of consecutive weekends or months).

Orcollo is playing some of the best pool ever right now. The man is nearly a machine. Nobody is his peer right now.

Magic ball rack

Not wanting to get into any pissing contests, but all the blame being put on the use of the magic ball rack is wrong.

For years the players would argue about the rack.
I went to rack your own at the Swanee about 15 years ago because of the racking issues.

Pat fleming's crew has told me the matches would speed up an hour if there was no racking issues.

9-ball rack is the problem with 9-ball.

All the MBR does is rack the balls tight- which is the gal, no matter what racking methd s sed.

Mark,

Aren't we removing what little randomness there is left with the use of artificial racking devices? Combining the MR with pattern racking takes all the randomness out. What is left to be variable? Break speed? Angle of contact? Moving x number of balls past the side pockets after the break? Breaking from the box? Nine ball on the spot? Does the breaker rack their own? Where does it end? On this point, I'm with Paul Schofield.

Must admit the one characteristic of the MR I do like is the infrequency of making the nine on the break. Most racks I've seen, the nine sits in the MR having not moved. Rather make my opponent shoot out the rack as most others on AZ would agree. That alone is proof of a tight rack.

Certainly hope your trip to Reno is better this year than last. Wish I could have made it out there again this year. Really enjoyed the Grand Sierra as well as the event. Actually had a couple of great meals there. Would love to discuss this further over a beer or two.

Thanks to you and the CSI crew for the Swanee live streaming. Watched almost all except the finals. Couldn't keep my eyes open anymore!

I think TAR should put together Dennis and Shane under the exact conditions of SVB vs DECHAINE
Can Dennis outrun that break? I think so

I would like to see this, but bring back the old school race to 100 for these two.... Imagine the possible swings and runs in a long set at the level both are playin at right now...

Would love to see Shane and Dennis play a TAR match. With a caveat though. First, none of this Magic Rack crap. Second, no pattern racking allowed.

Thought it was ridiculous to watch Dennis make the same numbered ball in the same pocket break after break. The two ball at the rear of the rack every rack. The Magic Rack may give a tight rack every time. Like the Sardo, once the rack is trained, the same ball goes in every time. Did anyone else notice Dennis marking the table the first time he set the Magic Rack in place? The game of pool relies on some variability. The Magic Rack gives none.

Regardless, it would still be a great match to view.

Did you watch both Dennis and Jayson warm up for the finals? Jayson, like most players in the Tournament, threw the balls on the table and ran them. Dennis kept RACKING balls and then ran them until he KNEW what he had to do to win. Smart is not Ridiculous. It was masterful and beautiful to watch and no one else figured it out during the entire tournament!

If Dennis is running racks because he knows how to break and control the One Ball, then why doesnt every "highly skilled" pro or near pro learn to do the same.

It sounds like I'm hearing everybody say that only Dennis can do this or that he is the only one that can run out over and over...., again the American players just dont want it bad enough to put in the work.

Dennis has action in his country and in Japan and China right? So why not in America?

This American guy named Corey Deuel was doing this soft break thing about 10 years ago and he was very successful , this bothered people and promoters started specifying that a certain amount of balls had to pass the side pockets towards the head rail.

Nobody had worked as hard as Corey at breaking . Corey seemed to become discouraged and his game fell off .

Gary,

How about Dennis' first match on the TV table. Did you notice him mark the rear of the Magic Rack. He found the right angle. Marked it. Then returned the rear of the MR to the same spot every rack. Also made the same wing ball in the same corner each time. He might have been able to do the same thing with a Diamond rack but I doubt it. Agree it was a pool lesson of the highest order. Some of it made possible by the pattern racking and the Magic Rack. The toughest part by one of the great pool players of our day.

True

I can understand why Corey was upset about this. They basically invented rules just to stop him

no magic rack?no pattern rack?no 9ball or 10ball on break?no soft break?what else is going be next?enough with those excuses and making new rules to stop one guy from winnings..what if shane / jayson / rodney won that swanee event?i bet we won't hear anything like this.i bet you'll say " he is the best in the world.no one is near on his level..etc..etc.."not because your hero didn't win or didn't do well in a tournament doesn't mean you'll come up with some ridiculous rules because you don't like the other guy..Dennis worked hard to learn those technique and i think he deserve to get a credit for doing that.

Dennis Orcullo Vs. Shane Van Boening TAR Match

Dennis and Shane already played for TAR (8 Ball, 10 Ball, and One Pocket). Dennis came out the victor in two sets out of three (he won the 10 Ball and One Pocket).

Mark Griffin stated that there was to be no pattern racking and no soft breaks. Dennis was doing both at the Swanee.

Not taking anything away from his awesome abilities, just sayin'.

Yes. But probably more like 10.

exactly- agree 100%-
if there would be more money (in Taiwan as well in the *overseas tournaments), many pro s from Taiwan would enter the tournaments in usa and europe.

Many very good Asian players.

Best in the World is thrown around a bit too freely.

Can we agree that right now Shane is the dominant American player?

Can we agree Dennis is the dominant Asian player?

Can any of the Europeans beat either of these two guys on a regular basis?

There have been several players from China who burst on the scene only to disappear.

On an all games basis, right now I give the mantle of Best in the World to Dennis. Shane is a close second. After that, who knows!

Probably no discussion on #1 right now... I think the conversation starts at the #2 level for best all around player, right now.... several can get in that discussion very quickly... (Alex, Busty, Shane...)

Yes

No, Chang Jun Lin and Yang Chin Shun play just as good if not better.

In tournaments yes, in gambling probably not. Gambling is not as popular in Europe it seems.

Not really. They "burst" onto the scene and then disappear from the eyes of US pool fans because they tend to stay in Asia when they realize coming to play in the US isn't profitable. The same guys are still dominant in Asian tournaments and do very well in international tournaments.

Maybe, although on an all game basis, I think there are half a dozen others who would probably tie Shane for second or even beat him considering Alex, Francisco, and Alcano all grew up playing rotation, while I have never heard whether or not Shane plays rotation at all.
