Dents in the felt

Not the same thing as denting the cloth from dropping a ball on it.
You: “cloth can’t retain a dent”.
I have almost 40 years experience replacing cloth, who do you think has more experience at analyzing cloth wear and tear? Me, or Dave?
Dave didn’t “analyze” cloth wear and tear - his racking technique is just an example of cloth retaining dents. And he didn’t bring it up here - I did (sorry Dave).

Looks like you’ll have to have your pissing match with yourself. So you’ll win another one...

Been playing for 40yrs and i've never seen this done. Not once.
I do it every time when playing on a new table. I’m 51 and learned it in the 80s …. I didn’t know you played pool man , I’m only 4 hrs from Tulsa , we should play sometime!!!👍🏻

When you tap a ball with another ball in order to make the ball you tapped stay in place, thats called creating a slight depression, a memory so to speak in the cloth so the ball can be racked in the same place again without the ball rolling off. This is usually done on new cloth to get a tight rack, or later in when the balls won't stay tightly racked. Over time that slight depression loses its memory, which is why its done again, and again. Thats the process of training the cloth to hold balls in spots for a short period of time.

So what about when a guy wants to mark a spot on the table to repeatedly practice a shot and he gives it a whack with another ball so loud it sounds like a rifle shot?

We have an instructor in the area that is constantly doing this and it kinda ticks me off because I feel it's disrespectful of the room and equipment. I don't know what if anything it does to the slate.

Don't sweat what your buddy thinks and just play.
I don't sweat anything anyone says. I know from conversations I have had with other people that he is wrong. I just thought if anyone had any documentation I could show him, it might set him straight. Thanks for your comment.

I've been around the game for 40yrs. These pool 'old wives tales' are common and many would fight to death as to their validity. Its not worth your time. Let the moron keep believing it.

I suspect the buddy will not accept anything anyone here says. Printed or not. Whether he will accept the results of a test is up for grabs.
Thanks Bob, I believe your right. It's like standing in front of a fan that's on high, and your trying to take a leak and expecting to stay dry. It's just not going to happen. Thanks for your input.

LOL your right. As for me I'm 67 and have been playing from the age of 13. Seems like yesterday I was riding my bike across town with Quarters I took from my Moms purse just to play some pool. My how time files.
