My Grandson (11 year old) and I will be in Denver in a couple weeks. He loves playing pool on either bar boxes or big tables, any suggestions?

Greenfields Pool & Sports Bar is also a great place:

Admittedly, they have barboxes only. But remember where you are -- the Midwest, which *is* barbox country! Denver ain't the East Coast. :)

Their barboxes are Valleys, but very well maintained. You won't find any strange rolls on these tables. And the cushions are true -- you can bank well on them.

(P.S. In case you're wondering how a New Yorker knows about a place in Denver to play pool, my folks retired and moved out there 15 years ago. While visiting my folks for the Christmas holidays, I snapped-off their 2009 New Year's Eve Open 9-ball tournament, that's how I know about the condition of the tables.)
 
Wynkoop!

Wynkoop Brewery is a restaurant/microbrew. The second floor is a beautiful pool hall. I have seen little kids up there, so under 21 is fine. Food and music are good, too. During off-peak hours the table time is cheap.

I agree, Greenfields is a great place.
I play there on Tuesdays & Thursdays.

They do not allow children in the building.
Even the people that work there can't bring their kids inside.
Most bars around here will up to 9:00, but not Greenfields.
 
Thanks for all the advise everyone, I think we are going to Wynkoop Brewery since we are staying with a friend who lives in Cherry Creek and he says it's a very nice place and not that far away.

Anyone know where Ernie Martinez is located? I think he was originally in Commerce City but I've seen his address as Denver also.

I would call though. I would also recommend Wynkoop's to take your grandson. I know they have held junior tournaments there so they are definitely kid friendly.

I particularly don't care for the "Koop" from a players point of view simply because unless you get Melissas table, you could get stuck on a table with serious pillar, table, and chair obstacles. However, from a kids point of view, Melissa is probably a world leader when it comes to her efforts in getting kids involved with the game. She does clinics, and is behind several activities and tournaments for kids. It would be a great place for a young one to have some fun, see a real pro in person, and the food aint that bad either from what I've heard.

If you do find yourself in the Englewood area stop on by Table Steaks, soon to be billiards, ink. We are one block west of Floyd and Broadway. We are also having a $1500 added 10 ball tournament and cue show next weekend (24th & 25th). Hope to meet you.

Melissa Little is the house pro at Wynkoop's and manages the pool room. Her website is: http://www.melissalittle.com/melissa_little/Home.html. I would suggest contacting her, she's great with kids and I think every Saturday she does a clinic for them.

Ernie Martinez currently works out of his garage east of Denver. He does not check his website so I would suggest calling the number that another poster provided. That is is cell.

If you find your way an hour north of Denver, I'm in Fort Collins and would be happy to meet you and your son at Match Up's if scheduling permits.

Thanks for all the advice guys. Table Steaks would have been fun unfortunately we don't get in until the 28th. and we are headed immediately to Vail to spend some time with a female friend of mine a fews day then back to Denver :). Saturday we plan on going to Wynkoop's for drinks and eats, some pool and then rockies game. Anything happen on Friday nights that we don't have to drive a long time to?
 
Almost forgot. Anyone have a cue refinished by Ernie? I've got a couple Meucci Originals that could use some work (Both MO-4) and also maybe have a couple shafts for a Black Creek I recently aquired. We are from Iowa and the only guy we've got around is Pat Diveney and although he's good I'm not that impressed.

I have had a number of cues that Ernie refinished for me, and they all came out really good :). But he's slow. I would nail him down a give him a deadline if you're only in town for a short time, or make arrangements for him to mail them to you when completed. You should be very happy with the results, of course all the cues I had him refinish was while he worked in different location, not his garage. But his new cues have great finishes so I think they will be fine.
 
I had the pleasure of visiting Table Stakes/billiards ink this evening. The Green Chili isn't bad and the tables are well maintained with shunned pockets. The regulars were friendly and I was able to play a couple of hours with one of the regulars. I don't know their policy on kids but it is a nice place with good equipment.
 
To add further question to the original post, can you folks offer any suggestions for places to play in the Eagle, CO area? I know Doc Holiday's in Glenwood Springs has a bar box but little else was offered on the BCA website regarding leagues. There was a bar box in a saloon in Eagle, but 9ft tables I have found on visiting to be limited if at all. Years ago I believe there was a high-class room in either Vail or Beaver Creek that had 9fts, and there was another bar (named something after the jack-o-lope) that had some good action/tournaments. But again that was many years ago and they weren't there on my last visit.

I will be moving to the area next year and am starting to look for rooms/leagues now. Can't wait for that Rocky Mtn air.
