Derby Action

Gulf locations have a fundamental issue when comes to economics -- the size of their trade areas. For instance, Biloxi's is 180 degrees while Tunica's is 360 degrees. No one comes here from the south to gamble, or do business, because there is nobody south of us except dolphins and seagulls. Simple geography is the reason a cotton field like Tunica can compete with a "Riviera of America" like Biloxi.

This means very little to consumers except that our choices are somewhat limited, but a limited market means everything to an entrepreneur who is trying to get something going. Why would anyone want to limit the area from which he can draw? I realize this had greater impact in the horse and buggy days before airplanes and Amazon, but it still has a great impact on all drive-in markets.

I have very mixed emotions about the current DCC, because I am the raving pool fan who would have happily driven the 800 miles north to walk into the Executive West, but I won't go around the block to be mistreated. And, friends, ya'll can all kid yourselves all you want, but we are being sorely mistreated in Indiana -- it is a "take everything give nothing" form of hospitality that succeeds only because of the rarity of the product purveyed.

I had originally rationalized that Diamond had inadvertently stumbled into a bad place, was forced into a bad spot, and eventually get things straight. After all these years, however, it is apparent to me that this is it, this is the plan. It is, as we say here, a "Hooray for me, and &#(@ you" proposition because it is Diamond's deck and Diamond is dealing, but old BB has never played that game from either side of the table.

And, oh, if you wonder how we ever got anywhere down here with our geographic limitations, it was treating folks right and giving them what they wanted or needed.
A lot had to do with security. A lot of people were getting robbed at the EI, got to the point where undercover officers were walking all over the place. I don't believe for one sec that D'mond chose the casino for some nefarious reason. Its close to their home base and offers plenty of security. I don't think Greg&Co. did their homework on just how much the casino deal would alter the side action.

but now that they're there, aren't they getting kickbacks from the casino?

Yeah for all the drawbacks(and there are no shortage of drawbacks) the security aspect is pretty nice. I hate Caesars as a rule but it's better than the alternative of constantly looking over your shoulder and dark alleys.

That is it right there. Unintended consequence of associating with a casino is that the casino tries to squash the pool action -- especially the side betting. But the location being right down the road from Diamond is huge!! Just look at the number of Diamond employees working the DCC -- every one of them would have to transport and hotel to work the DCC at a different location, vs go home at night from the Horseshoe.

the biggest hold back i saw was the casino is located too remotely. so with no rooms available 6 months in advance for the whole trip means its hard to go. and you really need a car if you dont want to eat in there the whole time.

getting cheaper rooms rates is nice but those that wont pay up for a room don't gamble in the casino so why accommodate them from the casino's view. any event a casino has, it wants people with disposable money not ones that are looking to just look.

vegas is always the best spot or reno. you have it all.

Do it close to the Gulf.... not in a casino.
Most important thing to consider Before picking the venue location.

Have a major airport close by that has an Airport $huttle to/from the hotel area, somewhere along Interstate 10 e. of TX.
No rental cars needed, no player pickup going on at the airport.
AL$O.... hotel room costs.

Some states/cities are ju$t too much) for our demographic.
Two players $150 total per night MAX, works, not $239. + a player special with only $15 extra per player per DAY, UGH.
Gulf costal towns have great sea food, better than Indiana in the winter. :)
I'd say, anywhere but FLA, too expensive there in winter.
Exactly…..Indiana…really. PUKE!

Yeah the security issue got to be a problem, but thats easy to control now. Back then there were no digital cameras and there were no dime sized cameras that could be placed anywhere and easily monitored.

cameras only get you a pic of some guy in a hoodie. you need security and well lit areas and customers that are not stupid on where they walk and go.

Can you hear yourselves? "Ooohh, I'm shaking in my little space boots." Did ya'll come up in the same world I did? Used to be that we took care of ourselves and the last folks in the world that a crook wanted to ^%$# with were the cats hanging out in the pool halls. The folks running the pool halls were also able to, actually they had to, handle their own business. Who were they gonna call? "Hello, police, I just got robbed of my weekend gambling take". Then, there was always the rule that you "don't shit where you eat."

There are a lot of old cats in heaven who are laughing their asses off, "They did what? Well, let me tell you how we would have handled that" and running to corporate America would not have been the answer. All you tournament aficionados can get your sanctimonius senses offended as much as you want, but you are just deluding yourselves if you do not understand that this is the way it was.

When many people come from out of town and don't have the "backup" required all it takes is a word about the cash flowing around to the wrong people. Being a tough guy isn't always enough.

This aint a Pool hall where we all know whos who and we all have our crews. You cant play tough on someone elses turff and when your traveling and in unfamiliar area's your at a disadvantage, your on their turff.

I was thinking more "capable" than "tough". Tough guys never concerned me, but the capable ones always had my full attention. A strong arm is always going to assess a mark -- the ability to pick the right one is essential to success. If someone appears to be broke or too much trouble, they pass and go on shopping.

Depends on the amount. Sometimes the smart guy has to live, to fight another day.

Appears to be broke is a misnomer. Good intel and it doesn't matter what you look like or who you're with.

if there is a name player match on a stream, a link is always appreciated
You have Carl playing Yawn!!!!! That whole I have so much more money and I wont play for anything normal is played out.
Then on the other end you have the Gomez crew playing all the back pocket, one ball, games that only they play.

And where does the convenience of the customer come in? Let's take it down to the most basic convenience: food. In all these years we still cannot get a good meal at a reasonable price. Diamond and Greg & Co. have not obtained just this simple item for us. (But wait, hold the show: some sycophant is about show up and tell us how great the food is.) Something is wrong when inadequate food is the issue year after year. I know what a casino can do when it comes to food, and believe me, if it ain't there, they just don't care.

Something is wrong with such a problem as inadequate food year after year. I know what a casino can do when it comes to food, and believe me, if it ain't there, they just don't care. Around here, both the casino and the promoter would be ashamed to show their faces.
No one really ever comes on here and says the food is great. Maybe a couple who go to the steak joint one or two nights. But there will be plenty that come on that act like you are an idiot not for packing a giant cooler, MREs, rice cooker, heating plate and blah blah blah, so you can have it your room while sharing it with three dudes. 🤮

All those bells and whistles pull people away. Hard not to notice glitz.
