Derby City Updates

Does anyone know what happened in the banks ?
Or what is happening in the one pocket ?
Why are updates so slow ?

Just a hunch

The Executive West Hotel has no Internet for public use. The only way any info can be disseminated to this forum is if an attendee has a laptop in their possession. The hotel phone system is kind of funky at times and will knock you off periodically. This is to be expected, though, in a large facility with lots of line noise.

Personally, I have had trouble logging in and reading posts on this forum today, and I have been knocked off quite a few times, clicking and waiting, then clicking and waiting some more, and sometimes being knocked off and having to start all over again. I know that there is a server problem which has created some difficulties.

Last year when I attended the DCC, I had no problem logging in to this forum and posting. With the server problems and maybe lack of attendees with personal computers in tow, we are not fortunate enough to have more updates.

Just a hunch.

Keith is home in D.C., and if he was there, you can be rest assured I'd be banging out some posts, giving as many updates as possible.

I've got a few friends who are in attendance at the DCC. If no updates come forth in the near future, I'll call them up on their cells and endeavor, if this server allows me, to provide some details about tournament happenings, action reports, mini tournaments, vendors on site, crowd size, and anything cool that happened.

Harry Platis from Seattle is there, and he's talked to Keith several times. I'm just as curious as everybody else reading this forum, looking for updates, and it does kind of suck a big egg not being able to read about the glorious details.

JAM [Hoping this post goes through and I won't have to write it again]

As of this writing they are down to two players. In the semi-finals, John Brumback defeated Truman Hogue on the hill. Johnny had jumped out two-zip hitting everything in sight on these tight Diamonds. But, after taking a long break, Truman came back firing while John got a little cold missing a couple of relatively easy cross-side shots.

Truman worked back a 4-1 deficit to win 5-4 in game 3. In game four, Truman scratched on the break. Still cold, John missed another easy shot and Truman ran 6 and out.

The final game was a nail biter, even though Truman didn't make a ball. Since he had just run 9 or 10 straight banks, John didn't want to give out an "easy" out. Truman's final shot, he was shooting at a makeable cross-side shot that needed some steam. And right when he was about to shoot it, Scott Smith called out," 4-ball cross side." Truman immediately botched the shot selling out the 4-ball leaving at A and the cue ball at B:

)END

Matlock vs. Brumback happening any time now. IMO, it's Brumback's tournament to win.

Where's the brackets??? I have been spoiled with being able to see how friends are doing at tournaments. Could call them on cell phones but I know how that can be.....

The AZB headline page has reported that Dave Matlock has won the bank pool event.

I say that every year but he never snaps it off.

I don't really know John but I have met him and he's a super nice guy. Have you talked to him?

Yeh this site was struggling mightily yesterday. Seems much better today.

I will be there Friday staying at the Hampton next door. They have a business center with high speed internet access. I will try to post some updates after hours Friday.

JAM,

Did Harry mention how he did in the Bankpool or One Pocket Tournaments?

I'm going to give Harry a call a little later in the day, just in case he was up late last evening.

Just now, I tried to reach Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh by phone, but he's currently competing in the one-hole tournament against Francisco Bustamante!

I did reach Brandon Shuff, a local young gun in my neck of the woods, who said he's never seen anything like the Derby City Classic. He said there is so much action going on that it's hard to keep up with it (LOL).

The crew who is filming the documentary is making the rounds, and according to Brandon, they have a video camera and can be seen holding the microphone above the crowd, hoping to get some good railbird sounds (LOL). They have been following Efren and Jose Parica around.

This is what I got from Brandon. Jeff Abernathy lost in a 9-ball 8-ahead set for 30 very large, and it was quick, with Jeff only winning a total of 3 games. Brandon didn't know who the other guy was, though!

Scott Frost is staying busy and did play Cliff Joyner, but I don't know the outcome.

Cliff Joyner must be a busy little bee at the Derby. He also spotted Corey Deuel 10 to 6 in one-hole, but Corey had to play all shots with the bridge. Don't know the outcome there either.

Brandon played Little Sam several times. Little Sam won the first set, and Brandon won the second. He said the side action is unreal, and after Brandon's win, many railbirds tipped him for his good performance. This is Brandon's first DCC, and he's thrilled to be there and having a ball!

Well, that's a little snippet of some of the action. Hopefully, when I hear from the Genie Man, I'll be able to provide a little more of the details. :)

Stay tuned for a report via the Genie Man, as depicted below!

Thanks

Thanks JAM, I'll check back later. Do you know if there were any Calcutta's at the DCC? Watching Harry bid a Calcutta is very entertaining to say the least.

Just got off the phone with the Genie Man. He won his one-pocket match in the tournament, race to 3, against Bustie. Great win for Ryan McCreesh! :)

The Jeff Abernathy match was for 15 very large, not 30, and was defeated by Little John.

Troy Frank beat Shane McMinn for a 4 or 5 very large.

North Carolinean Tony Watson spotted [Jonathan] Hennessee from Tennessee the 8, and after a long match, ended up winning.

Tony Coleman defeated Harry Platis who was getting spotted 8 to 6 for a large chunk of change.

That's a snippet. Poor Ryan has been up all night and is just getting ready to get some sleep. Anybody who has been to the Derby knows that sleep is a definite luxury. There's so much going on that you never want to take a break, for fear of missing something! :p

Duel vs Joyner match was 10-6 & the break, Duel has to use this new 'extendo' bridge for 500 a game. Last report Corey was 1 game winner. I wonder how Duel & Joyner would match up without the bridge being involved?

Watson vs Lil John match was for 15 large a piece.

My buddy, Mark 'The Shark' beat Chicago Freddie in the One Pocket tournament & then got Freddie's autograph after the match. Chicago Freddie is in almost every one pocket book there is. Where else but Louisville can you get to play against legends like this? Mark said he also watched OldHasBeen lose his one pocket match....guess my friend Tom unfortunately lived up to his nickname. Oh well, I am sure he enjoyed himself and is enjoying the action as he is always found on the rail, soaking in the action.
