A buddy of mine said he was going to the Derby City this year. I have always wanted to go to a big tournament. I asked him if I could go. Well the problem is that I've never been to a big tournament out of state/town. I want to know what I should expect and if any of you would show me the ropes/whats going on. I'm not exactly positive if I'm going yet, but any help would be appreciated. Also, what are the dates. Thanks in advance.

Go. If you have to sell something. Go.

Trust me, you could not pick a better tournament or a better year for that tournament than the Derby City this year. Just pay attention to what you are doing and act with some common sense and you will have a fantastic time. Bring a camera and turn OFF the flash. Walk around alot, you will still miss more than you see but it is amazing what you run into.

Seriously you should go.

Even if you have gone to big tournaments out of state, you'd still wouldn't know what to expect out of Derby City since there's nothing comparable to it.

Go to the Derby City Classic forum http://forums.azbilliards.com/index.php (scroll down to Derby City Classic) and read some of last year's action reports.

The Derby is a special event

It may be the last true 24/7 action around. Everybody is there and all manner of talent shows up. Trick shot masters...card players...super cue venders (literally millions worth of cues)...bank OP and 9B champions...14.1champions...even an all night three cushion room. Mini tournaments...hot babes you have never heard of with impeccable strokes taking your money at the table or under it... There is opportunity to learn earn and get in trouble all under one roof. It is a rich experience. Use your head and it can be the time of your life. I've met many fine people and have nothing but positive memories from the experiences.

Like JCIN said, you should go...sell something if you have to but just go. If you've truly never been out of your own town for an event, travel with a buddy and keep your nose clean.
 
Smoking

Will it still be banned since the judge overuled the ordinance? Would not go if they lite up again. Very enjoyable to attend with the smoke free atmosphere.

You've heard of a Three Ring Circus. This is a Five or Six Ring Pool Circus!
You'll get to see most of the players you only heard about on here.
If you go once, you'll come back every year! :)

JAY IS CORRECT; I WENT MY FIRST TIME AND HAVE BOOKED THE SAME ROOMS IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE TOURNAMENT FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR. I BROUGHT ME NEPHEW AND HE TOLD ME, "UNCLE GURU, THIS WAS THE BEST WEEK OF MY LIFE!".
