A question on wood in title.

I have always liked the browns and blacks found in this wood.
It just seems beautiful to me.
I guess my question is why do we not see it used more often?
Is it hard to work with?
Does it not have good durability or strength for cue making?
Any thoughts would be great.

Thank you for your time

Weight is the biggest issue. Availiblility of longer pieces with no defects is another. The trees are protected from cutting down, meaning you can only harvest what is already on the ground. Unless it gets flat on the ground it picks up too much heat and crack something fierce.

Desert ironwood

I love working with Desert Ironwood for butt sleeves. I have found it turns much like ebony or african blackwood. It has a nice glossy finish without a sealer or finish. You definitely need to look out for hairline cracks however. It is weighty, but as a sleeve, you dowel it to 0.750" anyway. It has beautiful gold, bronze, and black coloring. It's one of my favorite woods to work with. It has a depth to it eerily similar to "cat eyes."

i would say price and ability to find large pieces without checks.

i would hate to see the price on a nice 18" piece of that stuff.

i have a couple of logs i bought, but i have no idea what i will get out of when i get into it.

My experience was depressing, I wasn't even lucky enough to get a piece long enough for a butt sleeve that didn't crack before it was finished turning.

Thanks for the replies so far folks.
I have a couple pieces I was lucky enough to get a year and a half ago.
I have a builder working with it now who is letting it sit for a long time in between cuts.
We will see what he can do with it.
I have not been able to find any pieces in the sizes I have currently in over a year.
The cue designed for the pieces I have will be awesome.

You are correct
The price I paid for 2 turning blocks that were 1.5x1.5x18 was $100.
Have not been able to find any like it since.

ya,that's not really a bad price considering the size of them and being check free.i would love to find some like that at that price.

i am hoping when i cut into my log it won't be full of checks, but my guess would that it is.

desert ironwood

I'll have one unfinished at the EXPO in March with leopardwood points. Come by booth L13 and tell me what you think. It doesn't have as much black in the grain as the previous photo. It should be a good one when complete.
