Some Ideas

#1. I would love to see one made that was "Gambler Themed" Had the 4 Card symbols cut out, but touching each other to form the holder.(Not just a square with 3D on it) Make it pop out!

#2. Make the chalk holder look like a slim rose bud head, (could follow the holder up with a stem looking shaft for the pocket.)

#3. make one look like a Piston head (for all us gear head types!)

#4. Could make it look like a Dice (Almost seems too easy, but I bet a Lot of people would buy them!)

#5. Maybe the Brass end of a shotgun shell / with hunting related images around it.

#6. 3D Flames with the sharper tiped edges pointing up, with access to the chalk being on the bottom.

#7. Bullets - side by side each other (similar to what a revolvers "Speedloader" would look like. or like a pickett fence, with access again on the bottom side, as mentioned above.)

#8. MOP Style 3D notched Diamonds - on each side.

#9. Celtic Knot Style - 8 Ball

#10. Celtic Knot Cross

Hey all,

So I'm doing a little design contest to come up with some ideas for 3D-printed chalk holders. Most of you are familiar with chalk holders, but if not, do a quick Google search. Most of you are not familiar with 3D printing, but you don't need to know about it to enter. 3D printing is simply a method of quickly manufacturing one-off products (instead of making ezpensive molds and producing mass quantities). You can 3D print in plastics, ceramics, some metals, etc. However, you need access to modeling software and knowledge of how to build, setup, and export the specs for printing (I have expertise here).

I will be launching a line of Sterling Silver chalk holders, which will be functional and/or novelty, for my website (www.fastnloosedesigns.com). Since they will be printed only as they are ordered, I can create custom designs and interesting shapes that maybe only a small few will appreciate.

For this contest, I will award the best TWO designs one SS chalk holder FREE, plus have that design displayed on my website for sale (you will be giving up all rights to the artwork by entering it into the contest). The value of the chalk holders is roughly $50-$100, depending on the amount of material used and complexity of design.

A cube of chalk is roughly 1 cubic inch, so keep that in mind when coming up with ideas. You do NOT have to submit drawings, since I know many people have great ideas but lack drawing ability. Those with drawing skills may have an advantage, but strong ideas alone may still win.

I can model a design that is relatively intricate and complex, but the simpler your idea, the better chance you have of winning, in general. You can come up with ideas that are very 2D, like lettering or phrases or simple graphics, or take a more 3D approach and design maybe a rack or other billiards themed idea. It does not have to be pool related, but I would highly recommend it be, since it is for a billiards design company. You may enter as many ideas as you'd like, but they must be submitted on this thread.

I will take entries starting now through Sunday July 14th, 2013. Winners will be announced the following Sunday July 21st, with their idea digitally modeled and rendered.

If you have questions, please ask them here, since someone else may have the same one. Let's keep it clean, guys! Good luck.

Chris

I would like a Rook Piece in simulated Stone design to hold the Predator chalk. This would look sharp in silver with black outlines for the stone blocks. If it could hold a square piece that would be cool also. I drew it with the Predator chalk in mind. Note the little hole below the chalk that allows for a wire to be inserted to get an old cube of chalk out. Obviously you could put the hole through the center and accomplish the same thing.

Hope you all like my design.

Coin Ideas

I got a chance coin when I was young from my grandpa. I think it would be great to put it on a chalk holder.

Very Basic

One more to add... I'd Like to see something referencing maybe these 3 common games?

I think the next version will have the sides be rectangular with 6 pockets. That way the chalk has room to wear away.

Reminds me of the projects we had in engineering school. I was tempted to pull out my old laptop, make a couple of designs with SolidWorks. What is the thinnest wall that can be used in constructing with their printer?

Why not just eliminate the rails on two of the corners and let the table span two sides? You can make the pockets a little bigger and have the side pockets overlap the corner.

What are you using the make the model?

Good idea. I might do that next. It was done in solidworks. I wouldn't make the wall thinner than 1.5mm

I was curious what you are using to create the actual tangible model. Plastic? Wax?

Here's an example of a simple idea. This is from one of the t-shirts I sell. I wanted to show this not only to give some ground to your concepts, but so that you can see that I'm not just going to Photoshop your idea - it actually gets built, rendered, then printed by a 3D printer. In this case, in Sterling Silver. This is just a quick look at a concept through to a rendering.

Hello Chris, got the shirt yesterday and she absolutely loved it!!

A few years ago one of my sisters gave me a nice pool oriented jewelry music box as a Christmas present. On the lid was a nice portrait of a 19th century poolhall where the clientele were dressed in their Sunday's best. I guess that was customary to dress like that when you go out. It looked very classy and nostalgic. I'll try to take some pictures of it and send them to you.

Congrats to winners franko and PickPocket - they have been selected as the winners of this small contest. Here were their ideas/submissions:

franko:
Newman, Gleason, George C Scott, Piper Laurie, each side showing a different image .

PickPocket:
#4. Could make it look like a Dice (Almost seems too easy, but I bet a Lot of people would buy them!)

I will have your ideas 3D modeled and show you a preview of them before I send to printing. However, there are 2 things I should note:

First, I will unfortunately not be able to print them in Sterling Silver (the size and shape of these chalk holders apparently cannot be printed in that material). HOWEVER, you both can choose to either have yours printed in Stainless Steel (much stronger and longer lasting than Sterling Silver), or take $50 cash each. The cost of printing the chalk holders is about $75, so the value of printing is higher, but since I cannot offer Sterling Silver after all, I am willing to offer cash prizes instead. Prizes to be paid out/shipped by August 21 (1 month from now).

Secondly, franko, I would like to suggest, on your design, to have it be young Fast Eddie, Fats, Vincent Lauria, and Johnny (PHJ). If you'd prefer your original idea, that's ok too.

Lastly, I'd like to give honorable mentions to Shannon.spronk (his idea was having "FATS/EFREN/EARL/SVB" on the 4 sides), and Careyp74, who actually modeled out his idea.

Thank you all who gave ideas and participated. I will contact those winners by PM soon!

Chris

Thank you

Thank you Chris, I am thrilled and would love the Chalk Holder, that means much more to me then $. I am looking forward to displaying it in my room.

I guess I never understood what connection is made between dice and pool. Or skulls and pool. Or Flaming Pool Balls and pool.

Careyp74 had the best looking.
