Mine would be in my hometown of Golden. As luck would have it, it would be the only legitimate pool room in town, such is the state of pool in Golden.

Best equipment, of course. Diamond 9-footers, six of 'em; two snooker tables and a billiards table. Those I'd try to find used. RKC would of course be my preferred mechanic.

I figure an L-shaped bar with no more than a dozen stools would be as big as I'd want. I'd run a happy hour special on Coors products, of course.

Ideally I'd be open 24-7 to accommodate Golden's college kids as well as the Coors shift workers. All my employees would take daily polygraphs to make sure they're not stealing. (OK, that part's a joke.)

I'd do my best to have weekly tournaments, as well as attract good players. Gambling would be ignored by management, but would be discreet, of course.

I'd be the houseman at least 20 hours a week, but would still need time for the rest of my life.

What about you? You can either own it, or just play there. Get dreamin'.

To Play?

Austin used to have a pool hall in an old theater called the Ritz. I think they tore it down, but it was 8-12 bar box tables, 50 cents to a dollar, good drinks, and a very laid back attitude. Might be fun to own as well. I'd put it in Williamsburg or one of the unsaturated areas of Manhattan.

To own?

The Lab - Eight 9 Foot Diamond tables with a pro shop and an engineering/pool nerd theme.

All tables equipped with birdseye view cameras capable of recording the session and capturing break shots or crucial shots with high speed video if requested.

Table #7 would be the test table. Bring in some kids from MIT/Cal Tech/Olin/Cooper Union to build a Robot with a good stroke, and then i'd test every single pool device possible. Kamui Chalk? Ob Shafts? Ivory Joints? The hit of a Gina vs. a South West...all of it. Double blind, scientific method, the whole shebang.

Take absolutely no endorsements from any pool related company. No APA, no BCA, No Predator, nothing. Just unbiased testing. I might have a Kool or Bud Light sign up though.

Pro Shop - keep a few cues from every maker and custom builder in stock for testing purposes - "the vault", and find a pool expert to help beginners buy their first action cues or pro players figure out if they need to move the center of gravity back a few millimeters.

It'd stay open all of 2 months, but I'd love to own it.
 
12-15 Diamond 9 footers, 4 Diamond 7 footers, and a Billiards table. While I'm not big on the idea, I would have a bar that served local beers and some micro brew. Also, if the room was right next door to a bistro or deli, it would be great. Saves me on cooking terrible food.

I would set aside a couple action tables. Maybe put a nice sitting area around the playing area where people could just sit and watch (and relax).

I would also have a little pro-shop and offer repair services.

It would be nice to get a reliable tour stop and have a resident house pro to give 1 on 1 lessons 2-3 days a week.

Also, a few TVs at the bar and maybe a couple around the place so everybody can catch the Steelers games or the Penguins games.
 
Further thoughts

Just one good HI-DEF TV, 40 inches above the bar, volume available only for pool action or for local pro sports (Broncos etc.).

No jukebox, but a good sound system nonetheless. For the TV, and for a
CD to play at the houseman"s discretion.

And I'd like to have a poolroom mutt -- maybe one adopted from the shelter just for that purpose, so the regulars could get to love it, and the mutt would reciprocate.

Also, the whole room would feature the fine Kamui products described in another thread..

10 9 footers for decent tournament play times .

8 8 foot coin ops , for a nice compromise for the 9 and 7 foot players to meet at for other tournies .

Beer and Wine and the bottled mixed drinks , no full bar. No waitresses to tip to save patrons money to play pool on a more regular basis . A station at the counter to walk up and buy your drinks.

If your not playing pool you don't drink. If 3 friends walk in and only 2 want to shoot pool , the 3 friend can rail and drink . If someone was playing and decide to quit and want to rail someone else's game they can still drink.


It's not a bar , it is a pool room , if you want to get hammered and holler and make alot of racket , go to a bar. Minimal snack foods , if your hungry go to a restaurant . No free pool and no regular discounts , just a decent hourly rate . There are bills to be paid.


If possible the sale of moderately priced cues , and the order of higher end cues . Tip replacements but no major repairs . If possible , designated coin ops for as challenge tables for action . 5 dollar 8 ball , 10 9 ball , 4 players max per table . A table captain may be appointed and if all players agree to a bump in the action so be it .


No happy hour and no draw beers , domestic can beers 1.75 , long necks at a decent price , all day long . A shuffleboard table . As you , 1 TV. No leagues , no handicapped tournaments .

Pool hall

2 nine footers, 1 tight pocket monster for me and 1 not so tight for the one pocket regs. 6 eight foot drop pockets for leagues and normal tourneys. An in house league, that pays cash. You want coin ops, go somewhere else, you want Vegas, call a travel agent. Food would be sandwich bar at lunch and a few items the rest of the time. Small bar with beer on tap. Wow I am describing the place I grew up playing in. Too bad we don't know what we have until it is gone.
 
Mine would have all the good equipment, of course, but would not have TVs, music, or smoking. Snack food and beer only, and the beer would be in bottles. No cans or pitchers.
Weekly Nine Ball tournaments would be held along with a One Pocket tournament once a month.
It would have a retro look and be called "Tramp's Place".
Later on I might put in a hot pillow joint, upstairs, which would give me a chance to do something I've allways wanted to do. Play the piano. :)
 
Make sure you have lots of chalk. I have been known to "borrow" a cube now and then.
Cuesblues would love a room in Golden. But Doug would be very "vague" about it.
 
Any one ever been into the Jointed Cue in Sac town? Thats a pool hall. My room would look alot like it. An old grill with the menu on the wall with a curved counter and turn around stools. Snooker, billiards, and 9' GC's. Main room and a finals room with stadium seating. I'd put big pictures of past and modern players on the wall. Like the WPT champions in the casinos. Everyone would need to know who they were or I would kick them out! One wall would be a mural of a mirror image of my place with famous players standing by and shooting on tables. The place would look twice as big as it was. Blues and swing on an old juke box [maybe with modern acoustics]. It would be kinda hard to get a hundred old brunswick Hoppe house sticks to put on the walls so I'd probably do like The Green Room In Madison did. No cues on the walls. All the cues were Huebler plain jane 2 pc'rs and kept behind the counter. You got a cue with the balls.They even asked you what weight you liked. I also think it would be cool to have an action room. Closed to the public. Members only. Cue lockers to. Not cheap ones either. Gotta feel good about leaving a $5000 cue in one. Probably in the members only area. And as long as I'm dreaming I'd like a first class bathroom with showers for my "members". Top it off with the best selection of beer in the country and I'd be pretty close to my dream room.
