I've heard from a couple of friends that Sammy Jones beat a guy out of $250,000 over a few weeks in Detroit years ago. Can anyone confirm this story and was Detroit a big action town at one time?

I've don't know anything about Sammy Jones winning
$250,000, but it's well known that in the 70's
Detroit was a huge action town.

I do know that Sammy Jones was in fact in Detroit gambling big money back in the 70s, as was everyone else here. The old Rack and Cue was the place where they played -- it was later shut down I think in the early to mid 1980s.

From what I understand, everyone used to play for hundreds of thousands, which is even more amazing considering that a dollar was worth much more then.

I would still say that Detroit is still a pretty good action town even now.

Bob Henning wrote a biography of Cornbread Red, in which he details the gambling scene in Detroit in the 60's and 70's. If even half of it is true it must have been incredible. I thought it was well worth reading (at least for the degenerate gambler or pool fanatic).

It was the winter time that Jew Paul and others staked players for 6 figure matches. Berney Schwartz was a local hero that would bet as high as anyone wanted in the 70s. Tremendous action. Best in the country at that time.

I just finished Dyer's "Hustler Days" in which story is told that in the 40's, LLassiter won $300k in one summer.

I wasn't there, not even thru the book...

Rack and Cue

Where in Detroit was the Rack and Cue, and what about any other pool halls that were known for their action? Just curious.

Jew Paul was and still is "The KIng"

 mY good friend Jew Paul and Cornbread Red ran things in Detroit when all the action was up there and Paul played almost daily for 6 figures.
He used to play one guy $180,000 per game one pocket. How's that for a nice bet. Paul is now in his 70s and still plays a great game of one pocket, but I'll play him with some weight (Got that, Paul) ? :p :p :p :p

Paul still plays as much as he can. I see him almost every day, and he's always trying to get a game. Good ole' Paul...he's amazing. At 77 years old, he still has more stamina playing pool than most twenty year olds!
