Diamond barbox bachelor apartment plan.....

I'm currently staying with my brother at the moment, but looking to get an apartment soon. My employment situation is settled in and I'm established, not to mention happy with my job. Not making a ton of money or anything, but it's slowly getting better every month, since it's partially based on commission. I work at a brand new.....new car dealership, so we're going to experience slow, but steady growth for a long time before it levels off.

Anyway, I'm single. No kids. I keep my bills to a minimum. No credit cards. Just paid off my truck.

So, I'm thinking about trying to start looking around for a charcoal gray Diamond barbox. I have a place to store it till I find a suitable apartment. At that point, I'll look for a 2-bedroom place with a room that's big enough to house the Diamond.

Then my plan is to go to work every day, hole myself up about 5 nights a week busting my a$$ to become a legit, seriously dangerous player. Try to hit my local NAPA league 1-2 nights a week (I'm a captain on one and an emergency player on another). Hit Open tourneys when I can. I'm sure I'll have 1 night of rest, so I don't completely burn myself out.

Now, I've lived in a couple of places where I had a pool table, so I know one can tend to get burned out at times, but both situations were junky-to-barely serviceable equipment. I think we all know that this can make a difference in one's enthusiasm to play.

One of my best friend's here, and fellow NAPA teammate, is a damn good table mechanic, so I got that going for me.

I don't exactly have cash in hand at this moment, since this IS a new plan (plus the truck JUST got paid off), but I thought I'd ask as to what people are seeing used Diamond barboxes are going for?

I'm in central Arkansas, not far from Little Rock. I have a truck and access to a trailer, so I'm willing to drive a reasonable distance, if it's worth it.

Have any of you ever done the apartment player-hermit idea thing?

I wonder how hard it would be hang one of those new LED lights in an apartment? I'd need to be able to set something up that I wouldn't get in trouble with the landlords.

Going to an upstairs unit would probably be a PITA over a ground floor unit, obviously. But, would anyone ever actually break in and steal a pool table?

How big of a room do I need for a barbox? I do NOT want to be cramped.

Anything else I'm not thinking of?

Diamond will NOT deliver to anywhere but ground floor. That may be updated with the multiple piece slates.

Most apartments will not allow a pool table due to weight limits. Check your city ordinances. You'll need an apartment in a solid building to house one.

15'x27' would be the perfect room
 
Sounds like you have a good plan. I'm sure you can find someplace near work that will let you have one. Now go sell some cars and get that table. Johnnyt

Diamond has been installing in basements and second floors for years now. I designed the smart table bar boxes and ProAms to be disassembled, brought in, and reassembled on location, the only thing that changes is the one piece slate is replaced with a 3 piece slate for easier installation. The 7ft weighs 800lbs, os it's not really that heavy, 200 lbs per leg.

You don't want the bar box, it's coin operated. You do want the 7ft ProAm as its the same table as the bar box, only without the coin pay system, and over $1,000 cheaper.
 
Why not rent a house or a one-storey duplex?

You'll get rid of the annoying overhead foot stomps, and reduce the many nosy and noisy neighbors.

As for room size, there are pool table room size charts everywhere, I am thinking Diamond has one on their site. Don't skimp, or you will be using a chopped baby cue when shooting from too close to a wall.

As for lighting, there are so many ways to light a pool table as to deserve its own thread.

Good luck, having a home table is nice, but it takes more than a little self-discipline to "work out" daily at pool, just like at anything.

Why stuck on a Diamond bar box? And why limit yourself before you even have a place for the table?

If you have aspirations to get to the level where you're competitive in open tourneys, I would seriously recommend getting the apartment or rental house first, and try to find one with larger table in mind... You're in control of that situation. Then, you can get the largest table you can find to fit in the space you have. I think it would suck to find a place to live that has room for a 9' table, and you're stuck with a 7'er because you bought it first...

It's a lot easier to transition your game from a 9' o 8' table down to a 7' than vice versa.

Start watching craigslist now to see what comes available...

I wouldn't be so fast to downplay a Diamond 7ft ProAm, as there are MANY tournaments held on them today:thumbup: the key to improving ones skills, is hitting balls in, and working on everything that comes with it, and any size table will do a better job than no table at all.

Are you really recommending he find another residence, because of a pool table? Maybe my priorities are different.

Diamond Bar Tables are the most fun table to play on, other than a Diamond 10 footer!

Not arguing that at all... but seems like putting the cart before the horse to source the table before you know exactly which space you're putting it in.

I'm simply offering my approach if I were faced with the same situation. OP might find an apartment/townhouse/condo/house to rent with more space than he thought, then regret going for smaller table.

I'd be collecting all info first... Such as what size room I can fit what size table, cost of different table models, cost of moving & setting up a table, cost of lights and wiring install, etc... And make sure to take tape measure when home hunting, so you can measure room sizes for footprint analysis. :)

Contact either New York or Arizona. They did exactly what you want to do, but did it for five years straight before unleashing their new rath on the public. Running hundreds of racks, thousands of balls became the best players in the world - and no one even new they existed nor what they looked like.

Pretty much any building built to code should have no problem supporting a barbox and imo you will have more success finding an apartment that will fit a bb as opposed to a full size. Good luck with everything.

Ps Either New York or Arizona was shot dead, cant remember which so you'll have to find the one thats left to talk to ;)

While I do understand one thinking I might be putting the cart before the horse, I do have access to a 9-foot Gold Crown at this time. My NAPA teammate/table mechanic has it in his personal pool room at home. He's been seriously thinking about upgrading to a 9' Diamond, so that would be even better.

With that said, my local NAPA league is played exclusively on barboxes. Mostly Diamond. The best local Open tourneys in this area are held on 7' Diamonds in another room.

Now, my Arkansas state tournaments are held on 8' Diamonds, but they don't feel much different to play on than the barboxes do.

As RKC said, TONS of great tourneys around the country are held on the barboxes. I don't think I'd be out of line getting one at all.

Another great point by RKC is that I need to find the Pro Am version, as I have no need for a coin-op.

The reason I figure that I'll be in an apartment is that is moderately rural here, so if you get a house, you're usually stuck doing outside chores and I have no desire to do that again. Been there. Done that.

Right now, I'm trying to find a place with a room that's at least 14x17, if not bigger, while being within my monthly rental budget. Big rooms = big rent.

I AM going to keep an open mind, however, so I'm not discounting any of the above suggestions. Keep 'em coming.

Get the best apt you can, that will fit at least a 7 footer. Then buy the table. Why spend the money and effort to store it, when Diamond will deliver it and set up the day after you move into your apt, so it will be like NEW, just like how you ordered it, and not getting scuffed up, and who knows what else while sitting in storage. Plus, why take money out of the bank on somehting you might not be using for many months.....

Like RKC advised, they are not all that heavy, and I'm guessing some waterbeds are MUCH heavier ;)

Right on, if you already have easy access to 9' then you'd be giving yourself access to the best of both worlds... All training options covered... ;)

Thin walls and neighbors. In the past, I have had some neighbors that would put the kibosh on this plan in a hurry.
