Diamond System explained - In old Disney cartoon

They are. There are systems for those that work equally as well. Plenty of material on them out there.

Unless you happen to be one of those who believes that it's voodoo which can only be learned through trial and error after a million hours.

Dave Matlock and Jimmy Reid among others would disagree, they being two top professionals who espouse banking and kicking systems.

Very true. Having natural feel is great, but having some good systems to do the math for you do wonders for your game. I know many banking and kicking methods, some are better for certain shots some are not good to use on others. The spot on the wall, and doubling the distance are my bread and butter on the z banks as an example.

I am not a billiard player but have used some of Jimmy Reid's kicking systems. I would guess that the way you estimate how it would come off the 3rd rail is. First figure out what rail you will be coming off from to make the hit. Then find the closest point on that ball toward the rail. Say for instance the ball you will be striking is 12 inches off the rail, then measure 12 inches up the rail, and that is your point. This is just a guess from another kicking system I have seen. Maybe some billiard players can comment.

No doubt. I constantly get claps and taps for great kick and bank shots. Most of the people watching don't even see me measure them with a system.

It's pretty cool to be able to kick one, two, three, and more rails and hit EITHER side of the ball.

This is why I get so aggravated when the anti-jump cue crowd likes to make comparisons between kicking and jumping by saying kicking is so much harder. It's not harder IF you know the right systems to point you in the right direction. From there it's nuance, knowing how the table is playing, and how much to adjust if needed. That's just practice and experience but the basic guide is all there in the systems.

Anyone can learn those basics in minutes if they have half a brain and can shoot the cue ball in a straight line to a point they aim at.

tap tap, i liken not learning things like that to not learning to draw the ball. And many systems are EASY! Not all include addition and subtraction. I know guys that have been shooting for decades that still "guess" how to hit the multi rail kick or bank. Much less shooting one pocket, where you most definitely want precision.

Just like I learned when I was in the marketing business. "If you work the system, then the system works."

Put it to you this way. I bend the SS tubing offshore, and they sit together in a group all nice, tight, and neat. Now I could get the route there without a tape measure, and the equipment would work. BUt the group tubing would not be nice and neat, as the measurments have to be exact so that as you make turns up,down, left, right the whole group stays together. I would have a ugly mess without my tape measure. The system is use your tape measure, and measure twice...bend once. No time for guessing.
