I would like some input on the pros and cons of the older style diamond table and possibly how old they are.

This is the one before the diamond wood, I believe its walnut. How do these play ? Does anyone have experience with these tables ?

I am looking at buying one , Or a gold crown II , Which is best and what would be your preference ? Thanks

Sorry no pics of the table and oh its a 9ft pro am !

I am looking to buy for my son Manny Perez who competes at the Jr nationals and world championships , We are getting a great deal on either one, so which way do you all recommend ?

We really want a diamond table , but not sure if this older style is what we are looking for. Thanks

Am older on has the red label. It is going to cost you $1500 to update it to the blue label design which has the right rail height. I would buy a gold crown if you not going to buy a blue label. With that being said I just sold a 4" gold crown 2 and bought a year old diamond blue label 9' pro am

Is the red label rail height a defect , Does the table not play right ? Thanks

I have a 7' red label pro cut pockets diamond smart table at home. And if the old 9 footer diamond you are looking at is a red label. Not sure if it plays the same as the 7 footers but, I wouldn't really say defective, just different from blue label. The red label rails are really springy. (Like playing pool with a rubber super ball) if i had to compare it with something. And if u hit a ball with some speed it tends to hop off the rails some. And it seems the spins coming off of the rails is unlike anything out there. Hope that helps.

Thank you ! that tells me a lot, I dealt with a springy table before and did not like it. I will have to find out if this is red label or not ! Thanks

If it's an older table then it's definitely going to be a red label. The rail design was slightly modified when they came out with the blue label diamonds but I think mrkdenton exaggerated the difference. In league we play on a blue label and we have a practice table that is a red label. When I switch between the two I don't notice a difference at all. I shoot all of my shots exactly the same and I don't think any of the league players even know the tables are different. With that being said, I like the gold crowns better than the diamonds before the diamondwood was used however most tournaments are played on diamonds so maybe you should get the diamond. Either way you can't go wrong...

If it's a ProAm, then I don't know for sure when it would have been built because the 9ft ProAms all started out with the Dymondwood rails from jump street. However, on a different note, all Diamonds can be updated to play like the new Diamonds being manufactured today, and yes I charge around $1,500 to do that update, which I might add, is cheaper than what I charge to work on most GCS as for the most part, are in far more need of repairs. What area are you in?

Don't worry about the Red or Blue label.. They really don't play much differently and I doubt if you covered the label that anyone could really tell. I have a Red label ProAm and it plays perfect..

The only consideration I would think is the age of the table, how it was stored and how many times its been recovered. Most of the older Gold Crowns and Diamonds played pretty well so I think you'd be happy with either.. Just make sure you have a qualified mechanic set it up for you and make sure the pocket facings are new, etc..

Manny, why don't you call Diamond & get the info straight from the horse's mouth. They will know what information you are looking for.

There is a HUGE difference between the red and blue on how they play, that is just bad advice saying that anyone wouldn't be able to tell.

The reds play VERY springy like mentioned above. The rails bank super short because of the rail height and as mentioned above they will have a ball hop at certain speeds.

The blue in my opinion plays perfect. They fixed the rail issues and they bank true. They don't play super springy.

If you do decide to go with the older models it would be completely worth it to invest in the blue label update.

And to anyone wondering, I own a blue label myself and every bar/poolroom I play in have reds.

This is simply not true.... If you have a table in a very humid environment, it will hop, even if its the newer blue label.

At Derby this year, a ton of balls were hopping off the tables as people hit them with speed.. I have played on both extensively and they are both fine.

There are subtle differences in play but nothing huge.. Basically as much change as going from one room to another with the same tables..

The real old Diamonds got springy if the temps changed at all, but played fine if in a good environment.

Im in Kansas Glenn , Overland Park to be exact , Not far from Olathe ks maybe 10-15 minutes from there .

My son really wants a diamond table and with his talent really needs and deserves one to practice on for Jr nationals and World championship, but finances just are not there for such a purchase of the newer Diamond tables.

Thanks for the input ! Really appreciate it !

Thanks ! Thats a good idea ! I just want some info from players who actually had played on them. thanks again for your help ! Ill give them a call !

One issue I have is Im told the pockets are big probably 5 " How much to redo the pockets by extending the rails Glenn ? Or is that part of the update?

I have a red label 9' Professional with Dymondwood rails and original rubber, I believe, and I do not experience the springy rail issue at all or any ball hop. My table is at least several years old and I've had it 3 years. The table plays well to me and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. I was worried about the blue label difference when I got it but haven't thought about it once more since mine was set up and seems to play just fine. I personally would not pay $1500 for an upgrade. But maybe I'm not a good enough player to notice a difference? Don't care.

That price quote is to modify the table to the point that it would play exactly the same if you'd have just bought a new Diamond table straight from the factory and they're going to install it tomorrow....with what ever pocket size you want.
