I was watching a 3 cushion match on ESPN this morning and saw a Gabriel's table. It looked very much like a Diamond. Who copies Who?

Good question.

I heard that there was legal proceedings that ended up with Gabriels distributing Diamonds and Diamond distributing Gabriels.

You can buy used tournament tables by Gabriels or Diamond from Diamond.

Gabriel distributes Diamonds in Europe and Diamond does the same for Gabriel in the states

Diamond

Gabriel was a Diamond distributor back around the late l980's. About 3 years ago Gabriel and Diamond agreed to represent each others products in their respective continents.

That in a nutshell is the situation.

arent gabriels made of steal base and diamonds made of wood?

The tables or not constructed in the same way i think. They only made a good deal. Gabriels is the only place to find diamond tables in europe, and diamond is the only place to find gabriels in the states. At least they each have one foot down in each continent.

Gabriels used to be welded, making them a pain to ship and install.

Now they are bolted together and can go anywhere any other table can go.

Check your dates Mark. I don't think Greg started to make Diamond tables until the 1990's.

The Gabriels Signature Pro Pool table is loosely a copy of the Diamond Professional. Gabriels uses Dianite (Dymondwood from the same supplier as Diamond), Simonis 860 Cloth, Artemis Cushions, 30mm thick slate (1 1/4"), pockets mounted flush to the rails like Diamond.

Gabriels pockets are made from marine vinyl (Diamond is leather.) The Gabriels frame is a steel U-Beam (similar to their 3 Cushion tables (Diamond uses Timber Strand with a similar tensile strength to steel.) Gabriels cushions are a K66 profile and Diamond cushions are a K55 profile.

Anyone interested in discussing the differences with me, feel free to call. Paul Smith, Diamond Billiard Products, Inc. (812)288-7665.

Diamond started making the Diamond Professional in 1987. Gabriels did not start manufacturing pool table until sometime in the 90's. Gabriels has been making carom tables since 1932.

Jay,

We'll forgive your slipping memory. You're just old.

lol

Diamond was new in the late 1980's. The Diamond Pro (designed with direct design specs from the pros) came out in 1991-1992 time frame.

And if you want to play on them side-by-side, you can swing through Fargo, ND in the spring. I'm constructing a room right now that will have both --Diamond Professionals in one neighborhood of the room, and Gabriels Signature Pros in another neighborhood.

The early 90's is the first time I remember seeing or hearing anything about a Diamond pool table. If they were being made before then, it was very quietly, and perhaps still in the experimental stages.

Thanks for the detailed answers. Although I've never had a chance to play on either table so can't compare them for playability, I have to say that personally I think the Gabriels Signature Pro looks a bit nicer that the Diamond Pro. I think it is mostly the rounded corners that look better IMHO than the squared-off ones Diamond use.

Do Diamond have any plans to cosmetically alter the Diamond Pro model, given your main competitor Brunswick does update it's Gold Crown model every few years?

NO, no need to change perfection:p

i have a 9ft diamond at home, and there are several gabriels in a club where i play.

I have to say the diamond beats the gabriels.
I prefere the pockets of the diamond. leather just feels and looks better and the form is easyer for the balls to be directed downwards to the pocket then on gabriels.

I also prefere to older woods (oak, mahogany etc ) above the the dianite. They just look better.

on the steal vs wood base... i don't think there is much difference. Both tables are very stable, and you don't see the steal.

One thing i noticed when playing on a gabriels in a club i only went once, was that the blinds of the gabriels where verticle to the ground. On diamond they go inwards. I hit my knee several times playing on that specific gabriels and hated it. I think it was the basic modle.
my order:

1/ Diamond Pro (i find the one with the square corners butt ugly :s, but i LOVE the rounded corners)
2/ Gold crown V (brunswick has been around longer then any other table maker. They know how to make a table)
3/ Dynamic II (there has to be a reason why this is the table you will find in most good poolhalls in europe and why they use it for the eurotour, the european championship, and many other top tournaments)
4/ Gabriels signature pro (BEAUTY in design, but material choice isn't top)
5/ all the rest.
