Diamonds with League-cut pockets (4 3/4) compared to Pro-cut ones?

Does that 1/4 inch make a substantial difference in your experience (if you've had experience playing both models of Diamonds)?

Also, does the League-cut version have shallower shelves on the corner pockets?

I have very limited experience playing with diamond tables. I was told by Diamond about 1.5yrs ago that there's an extra charge for league cut tables. I forget how much exactly, but its around 3-400.

At Society Billiards in NYC, all the 9' Diamonds are league-cut Red Labels (save for one pro-cut table in the back).

The league-cuts are extremely fair. Although I wouldn't define them as generous, they also don't demand the pocketing adjustment that pro-cuts do (nor cause "Diamond-Shock" to the uninitiated).

Picture them to play something like a double-shimmed GC, but perhaps with the perfect setup in terms of cut and drop.

I really liked playing on them when I used to frequent there.

IMHO, 1/4 inch makes a big difference and I don't believe the shelve will change.

I had 4.5 pockets and eventually went to 4 5/8 and that was a noticeable change.

I have a pro am 9 footer with 4.25 inch pockets cut from the diamond factory and it absolutely plays tougher. and not by a fraction in my opinion either. When moving from my table to a pro cut I see a clear difference even though its only a quarter of an inch.

If you plan on having some really hardcore practice sessions and are okay with getting pissed off relatively often, 4.25 is perfect. if you want to have fun then i recommend the 4.5 pro cut.

I ordered my Diamond last week and went with a 4-3/8ths inch pocket.

Just 1/8 of an inch tighter than pro-cut. I feel like a quarter inch or more tighter than 4.5" starts to affect the way the game is played.

Haven't played on diamonds w league pockets only pro cut. Played on plenty of tables w regular pockets and know my game needs to be extra sharp on those diamonds and can't use english the same or cheat the pockets.

Think its kinda wrong to have anything but pro cut on Diamonds. That'd be like ketchup on steak.

Don't any of you tell me you do that either. Hate to block someone over that

These are all excellent answers but something to keep in mind is cloth condition. Many competitive players on this forum may only play on a Diamond during a tournament. In those conditions, the cloth is usually new which can make the pockets play easier. Poolrooms like Society may only recloth their tables a few times a year, if that. "League cut" will tighten up once the cloth has been worn in.

If this is for a home table, I would probably go with pro cut. Your table will play like new for years and if you get wider pockets, it'll just feel easy. If this is for a poolroom, league cut is the way to go.

My Diamond Pro-Am has 4.25" pockets and the pros that come through here love them. Guys like Dennis and Shane may practice up to twelve hours a day when they're here. All I can say is you better hit the pocket clean or that ball will either bounce out or stand up and spit at you!

What do the side pockets measure on league cut pockets?
That's another good thing to consider if someone is leaning towards league-cut Diamonds because they might play more "fairly" for mostly average-player patrons than a pro-cut model.

The side pockets on most typical tables of any brand seem to run about a half-inch wider than their corner pockets, so that measurement figures to be about 5 1/4 inch on a league-cut table. I guess a call to the Diamond factory might be a wise way of ascertaining the correct figure?
