Did I Make Gerda Mad?

In Peoria a few weeks ago Gerda was signing some autographs for some people, and i was seated right next to all of this. so i asked Gerda how school was going, and how long she had left to go. she replies this is her last year, as she is signing some autographs.

then i said "After you graduate you can get a real job, huh?"

to which she replies:

"We'll See"

did i offend her?
did i make her mad?
her tone seemed to indicate that.
the other people there kinda laughed.
oh well.

seeings how you're not a friend of hers that she knows, combined with the fact that your tone probably wasn't right............it would have pissed me off too.

you probably annoyed her a bit. she probably felt that you are too intrusive, asking all these questions bout her studies then laying the smack down on her. not only that, but she may have felt that you are in some way insulting her profession as a pro pool player.

Did you mean it like that or did it slip? You embarassed her in front of everyone, and if you meant what you said you are....not nice.

Yeah, there was probably a whole bunch of better things you could have said, if it was even necessary to say anything at all.

In this politically correct society you are not allowed to say what everyone is thinking.

But I would doubt that anyone would, or should, get mad at that question as it is a pretty commonly asked question. Asked routinely of sports celebrities.

In fact, the other version is, "this job sure beats working for a living."

What is the reeal job going to be? Pool is a Job for Pro's... ;)

But on the other hand ...

Seeing how she has not placed too well for the last few years,
she might having been thinking along those lines too.

Most Pool players take that type of comment as a joke,
although she is from Germany, and might not take the
same way as an American poolplayer would ...

It's not the song that you sing, It's how you sing the song!
If you think it was taken by Gerda the wrong way, send her an email at her website apologizing to her if she thought it was offensive because that was certainly not your intention. It just sort of, kind of, came out that way.

Hey, DCP. Hope you're well, and that you're getting at least a few rolls.

Unless you're a friend of Gerda (in which case your comment would likely be interpreted as a joke), this kind of comment is a bit off-limits. One of the most basic concepts of diplomacy in human interactions is that you should never make light of what somebody else does to make a living. Most people, whatever their chosen trade, have worked very hard to attain whatever level of competency they have in that trade. Professional poolplayers are no exception. Gerda worked very hard to learn her trade, and has, among other things, a world championship to show for it.

Starting this thread shows that you regret having made the remark, so I commend you for that. As others have suggested, drop an E-mail to Gerda (perhaps through her website) with an apology. You'll feel better about all this if you do.

Just to keep the record straight, she is from Austria.

No one knows the answer but her, DCP.

But, hey, why is she going to college anyway?...To make more money doing something else besides playing pool, I presume, so I'd say there's no problem here, just a sad reflection on the status of pool.

Why not just say, "best of luck" and leave it at that?
I think I would be offended if you said that, but like everyone else said, just ask Gerda.

If you check the "player Q&A" under the players section of AZBilliards Gerda says she graduates early next year and hopes for a business apprenticeship(in something billiards related though she doesn't say that). I doubt she was insulted about you asking about her plans, but she may have taken the way you asked as an insult to her chosen livelyhood (say hi next time you see her and see what her reaction is).

Yeah and you might want to offer a apology to her about the last time you met and tell her you did not mean what you said as an insult and it was mearly a slip of the tounge. It sounds pretty rude and pretty blunt the way you explained that and I doubt many would take that from someone they dont know well in good spirit.

Ouch! Like sjm said, go to her website and make an apology. Tell her that you've signed up for an "Anal Cranium Biopsy". It's a relatively new procedure where they remove your head from your ass a little bit at a time. ;)

Hi Jeff,

I found your post humorous that you think it is sad to see pool players going to University :) God forbid people educate themselves!!! Just kidding... FOr me, your post fell into the category of "Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm."
