Did this guy ruin pool?

Did CJ Wiley single-handedly ruin professional pool by forming a rival tour? The PBT was formed in 1991 and this bozo goes off and forms his own PCA tour in 1995? Granted, the PBT probably needed a few things changed, but this guy and his selfishness started the downward spiral. What do you think?

I think you should ask Blackjack. He could give you the best answer because he was part of the group that broke away and formed the PCA, along with George Breedlove, CJ Wiley, and Earl Strickland. Better yet, track down CJ Wiley and repeat what you wrote here. CJ Wiley is far from being selfish. BTW, if someone hasn't told you yet - through your posts you come across like an idiot. If you think of preparing a rude response for me, don't waste your time - I won't bother to read it.

I'd ask BlackJack, but he left us. I know you're reading this StrayBullet. Sounds like I struck a nerve when I mentioned CJ. Are you guys...uh, freinds? ;)

Why is this guy always bashing people ? Digging bad things on every post that I see. Sigh...

I'm just saying if he didn't take off and create another tour, pool would probably be a lot different today. The PBT was only 4 years old when he did this, so sure they're going to have issues. Now we have a gazillion tours and no money or popularity. I'm sure Grady would agree.

No.
PBT head Don Corleone Mackey ruined the men's tour.

You are correct, I feel the tour would be in great shape right now if Joe Kerr never got sick. When Don Mackey took it over he ruined it. amc4

I personally think that it has more to do with a lot of the players on the tour. They have dug themselves a hole that will be hard to overcome. I don't know all of them personally, but there are a great deal that have done some pretty bad things to make corporate sponsorship a very difficult thing to get.

So many players have had cues given to them by manufacturers to play with and the player turns around and just sells the cue and doesn't give them a nickel. I personally think the pro event that took place in Milwaukee, WI when Earl Strickland walked out of the finals against Corey Duel because the ref was racking well ahead of the spot had the biggest impact on losing Camel as a huge sponsor. I understand where Strickland was coming from because the ref was racking at least inch high giving a big advantage to Duel. However I think Strickland handled it very poorly, there were a lot of people there that paid money to see the finals, only to have Strickland quit and not have a final match, as he said to prove a point. My thoughts are was when that NFL ref screwed up the coin toss did the team that was shafted stomp off the field? No. Strickland should have noted the racking situation and have others note the problem and settle it behind closed doors where the fans don't know and then they see the finals that they paid to see.

I also think that all stems from that these guys are the best in the world at their sport and they can't even make a descent living. Sad but true.

Then again these are just my thoughts and opinions.

If the PBT was doing well or showed signs of doing well then the PCA would probably have never been formed.
Lots of things tend to drag pool down. Lack of good tv exposure, hustler aspects of the game, etc. etc. Don't think you can blame one person.

Mackey = Death of Mens pool, CJ tried to make a difference but wasnt followed like Don Mackey. He was like the Pied Piper, had alot of guys follow him to the river too...which ended up being a mirage in the desert. As long as pool players and con men are involved with the administration, marketing/development, logistical & operational ends of the tour it will continue to suffer as it has for years. The only US based tournaments that help pool are any Allen Hopkins events {he comes up with some winners}, pools WORLD SERIES...The US Open and the SUPERBOWL of pool, the DCC. All of them successful inspite of pools organizations past or present.

What Do You Think?

I was told by a girlfriends mother once that you can put a $50 man in a $500 suit and you still have a $50 man. She also stated that you could put a $500 man in a $50 suit and you would still have a $500 man. I think the game is full of $50 men. Don't get me wrong, we have some very nice, clean cut, professional players out there but many more $50 men. Guys that grew up on the streets, used drugs at some time, drink a lot, and love to gamble. They don't care how they look in public. This turns off a lot of hard working folks who want to get the most entertainment out of their hard earned dollars. Yeah, there are those of us that still love the game anyway. You want to change the image of pool, upgrade the players. Do a makeover. If that isn't enough, maybe this will help. When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you do good. That's my take on it. Good or bad!!!

CJ and Hopkins formed PCA so they could stage tourneys for ESPN.
Don Corleone Mackey turned down ESPN the year after ESPN showed the US Open live.
PCA died before PBT and Camel had their squabble. PBT and Corleone Mackey sued Camel and won. Where did the settlement money go ? I dunno but Mackey has a nice Florida home now.
To this day several PBT players are owed a lot of money. Let's go ask Parica, Wetch and Efren to start.

Everything and anything that was "professional" about mens pool in the US was ruined at some point or another. Look at state of mens pro pool in the US right now.

Maybe you should make sure that you have all the facts before you go off and start calling people "bozo's" & claiming they're selfish and "single handedly" ruined pool. In a world full of degenerates(there's a lot of nice guys in pool but also a lot of degenerates), it's impossible to blame the state of pool on one person, who by they way, ALWAYS presented himself nicely. CJ always wore nice clothes to tournaments and projected an image that alot of pool players wouldn't... at that time, a lot of players could be seen at "pro" tournaments in sweats.
Instead of starting threads accusing people of things, maybe you should consider starting threads asking about the details and facts of something that you would like to know.

Well said, Purdy. There's too many punks out there trying to make a living playing pool. Unfortunately, the job skills required are hustling, lying, cheating, stealing and scamming. "Mr. Corporate America, do you want to sponsor this guy"? Ha Ha.
