Different ways to finish out castings on GCs?

I'm looking at purchasing a GC III that is going to be refinished. I am probably going to go with an ebony or gloss black finish on the wood parts.

What are some interesting ways you all have seen to finish the castings?

In the automotive world we had all kinds of crazy powder coats or metal dips that looked great, but I'm wondering how some of them would look on a GC.

I was thinking of refinishing all metal parts on the GC in black chrome, as seen below.

Thoughts?

Castings look great all nice and shinny but when you have to get down on a shot the glare from the casting will blind the shooter. This is why alot of people didnt like the GC4 in the high gloss brass like gold finish it still is to shinny. You will need to put a towel over the corner to shot.

the one color i just dont like is chocolate brownie color just didnt pop out looked to flat.

that's an interesting insight.

I'm not sure that this would be as much of an issue with black chrome, but it's something I will take into consideration for sure.

Go to a rim shop lay it down flat like your shooting over a corner see what its like.

On GC1,2 you can refinish all the trim there held on by screws most 3,4 and 5 you might have a tough time getting all the pieces off to finish right.

Good luck on the project I think i'm going down to the tire shop and look at some of those finishies too.

Thanks,
Craig

Very good point Craig. On the GC3 the metal trim around the rails does not come off or if it does you risk damaging the top of the rails. On the GC3 this is a bronze color. What about a hammered bronze paint with a few layers of clearcoat over it to protect it. I think that might look nice next to black.

True hammered paint and some clear will work I have used it on my lathe and custom stand before with excellant results. routine maintanece wil always keep it looking nice.

I had the castings and trim on my GC polished and I like the look however the I hate the fingerprint smudges that are always on it.

The black chrome finish that you posted would look very nice also.

casting finish

Having dealt with custom bikes over the years , I really got tired of all the polishing of chrome as well as billet aluminum > Also most chrome now days doesn't have the hard durable finish that resist's scratching, as we mighy hope for it to be. Not that powder coating is any harder but is more affordable as well as more options avaiiable for colors and finiishes. I did my own GCII in a silver hammertone on the trim and castings and think it's the nutz >> good luck
