Really, I'm not mad. I knew there were issues with this tournament going in.
I'd talked to the week before and she had mentioned there were issues with the TD. I was concerned that this was going to be yet another tournament I wasn't allowed to play in, and at my local pub no less. So I stopped by to check.
She indicated that there was no way the pub would be restricting players. They might introduce some sort of handicap system (which I was cool with, you have to keep the dead money interested.)
So Sunday rolls around and I show up an hour early to hit some balls. Everything seems to going along ok, there was a decent turnout for a small irregularly held (monthly?) tournament. I go and pay my $10 and sit near the tournament table so I can watch the draw.
I see that they are putting names into a jug to draw..... Ok not the normal way to do a draw but it works. Then I see the TD writing the names in all the way down into the B side of the sheet.
WTF
I seriously don't need this kind of stress so I write off the rest of the day to incompetence and grab a seat at the bar.
The bouncer goes to check on how things are going and notices that the draw sheet is pooched. Keep in mind we haven't even started yet.
He goes back to the office and prints off another bracket for the TD to use. The TD then refuses to change his original sheet but takes the second one to use for B side matches.
Most people know how a double elim bracket works, but if you don't here's a quick breakdown.
So..... since he used one bracket A + B side for the A side (his rational was he didn't want anyone to have a buy), you had 2 main streams up to the A side final, Except the road to the final on the A side of the A side bracket is shorter to the final than the B side of the A side Bracket. (confused yet, he sure was)
Now comes the real treat, since the numbers on the A side sheet that tell you where to put losing players on the B side have no relevance to the bracket on the second sheet and the players on the B side of the A side sheet have no numbers at all.
This is where incompetence turns into ill intent.
with no guide on where to put B side players the TD put them where he wanted them to the benefit of his buddies.
For the record there were 12 players including the pub owner.
I watched the pub owner win 4 matches on the B side after winning his first match on the A side before losing and dropping down to B.
He would win one match and the TD would just send up another player to play him until one of them finally one and knocked him out. At this point I thought we were close to being done.
He played 4 matches on the B side in my mind he must have been close to the B-side final? Hell no. there were still 8 people left in the tournament.
Me and my buddy Al got called to play for the A side final. He edged me out hill hill so I went to see how long I had to wait and I find my name way down on the bracket.
LOL I should be waiting for the final on the B-side. I say something to him and he just scratches out my name and puts it up on a new 3rd blank sheet he's just started filling out.
By this time Al's had enough and goes to the TD and asks for the 2nd place money since that's the worst he can do. He leaves and says it's my tournament to lose.
Literally 2 hours later in a race to 2 tournament I finally get to play the B-side final for 1st place.
I win the match and the TD hands me $45 for first.
This is my pub, I don't want to boycott events there because the management is really supportive of pool. But when there are 3 places paid out and 1st place only takes $45 of $120 there's something wrong.
I took the money and didn't say a thing to the TDurd. Went over and dropped my money on the bar in front of the bouncer and he said, that's all you got? I just smiled and said, what do you expect from this guy.
I used to run tournaments at this pub. I did it for a few years with no issues till I had to quit because of work conflicts.
Anyways, I knew that someone else had offered to run it, and I offered to fill in when he couldn't but I wouldn't be back (for tournaments) until they got rid of this incompetent sleeze bag turkey.

Most people know how a double elim bracket works, but if you don't here's a quick breakdown.
- First you find the right size for your tournament.
- next you fill in the names all on the A side. If there are extra spaces a few players get buys into the next round.
- when a player loses a match there's a number under his corisponding match that indicates where on the B side he gets seeded.
- there are multiple streams to the top of the bracket on both A and B sides
