When I was 18, during the summer, I worked for a Highway Construction Company. We went all over western Kansas doing highways. We would get breaks in towns that were close to us at times, and I had 3 older guys, in their 40's, that wanted to back me and be my bodyguards. Seemed like a good deal, so I took them up on the offer.
One day, we had bad weather heading our way, a tornado warning, so they let us take off early on a Friday, little before noon. 5 of us piled into my 55 Ford at the time (because I had previously totaled the Beloved 55 Chevy that had been mine, and my brother's before me), and took off for Dodge.
We stopped at a little town, can't even remember the name now for a beer or two. I tried to get a game of Pool while I was there, but no takers. Lots of farmers in there. Then 1 guy suggested a friend of his, but he just played Snooker and not Pool. I was desperate, so I said sure. He had on suspenders.
He said he was no match for me, and suggested a spot. We haggled a little, but I was short on time, so I gave in to him even though I normally would not have. I spotted him 60 points a game in Snooker for $20 a game. (this is 1966 dollars). We went back and forth a little, but I ended up the worst of it by $40. I laughed later thinking the ole boy with the suspenders had clocked my speed pretty good.
That's not the end of it. We listened up to the weather reports and decided we better make a run for Dodge with a little break in the weather.
We were going down the road, feeling alright, joking around, when I turned my head to the left and said, 'Holy Shit', everyone looked, There was a tornado on the ground paralleling us in a field less than a 100 yards away.
(I was just cruising about 50 mph). I put the pedal to the medal, and did
not let up until we were coming into Dodge. Scared the bee jeebies out of all of us.
