I have heard opinions on this from both sides, I personally agree that chaulking them helps control whitey on the break, but countless players have told me they don't chaulk, simply put.....let's here some opinions?

I think they should be chalked, but lately I've experimented with not chalking. It forces me to be very careful about hitting the cue ball very square.

I chalk, seems that its easy enuff to miscue with a chalked phenolic. I'm going out in a bit to practice before a doubles game tonight. I'll try a few unchalked and see if it makes a significant difference.

To Chalk, or not to Chalk is the question....CHALK.

Hello,

I have a J/B with a phenolic tip and I still chalk it, even though it does seem like it wouldn't really matter. Chalk it, better be safe.

I have a phenolic break tip, and I chalk carefully every time.

Miscues are one of the ugliest mistakes in pool, and I try to avoid them at all costs. ( Especially on the break.)

I would never neglect chalking on the break, especially with a phenolic. That said, my friend is one of the top players in Korea. He uses a ~$30 3 cushion house cue to break with, and it is completely devoid of chalk. He told me he doesn't need any, he only hits center ball anyways! He's got a very strong, accurate break. The cue's got a leather tip, but still relevant to this conversation I hope!

I second this!

And oh! I love your avatar! Coolness!
And I kid you not!

Phenolic tips...

Seems like this would be a no brainer type of question. Even though a phenolic tip can be used without chalk, why would anyone think it should be done? If you chalk the tip, especially when breaking, you are much less likely to miscue on your break. Seems like it would be cheap insurance to ensure a much more positive outcome, doesn't it?????

Theoretically, chalk should not matter on a center ball hit. I break pretty fair, but even when I bear down, my break is sometimes a fraction off center ball. Chalk will be an asset in those cases. I would also have to change a deeply engrained habit if I were not to chalk before every shot. I like my routine the way it is. Lastly, I see no down side to using chalk on the break, even if it is unnecessary. The house man needs to do something at the end of the night.
