I bought a table about 20 years ago and I thought it would be cool to get red because it wasn't common in our area... I will never get red again. I bought my last table 3 years ago and I discussed the color with my wife and she didn't really care... I ended up going with the standard green.

I just changed the cloth on my used Brunswick, it was red and I changed it to light blue. I really dislike the red as it always seemed to be obnoxiously loud in terms of color. Now I cut up the old red cloth and use it for break pads.
Just as a side note, we had a snooker table recarpeted in gray and it really looks sharp!

I have only seen one or two grey clothed tables, both in random older tournaments. Got any pictures?
I've only ever played on good, old green baize... and once on a blue covered snooker tabled, which belonged to my friends grandfather when we were teenagers.... Used to set up 15 reds in a vertical line and if you pot, you nominate a drink, if you miss you take a drink.

I think grey works best to my eye. Keeps my eyes feeling 'sharp' with the Dynaspheres I use (and also the Black Aramith's my friend insists on...) Not sure if 'sharp' is the right word to describe, but I feel more awake playing longer sets on lighter cloth - probably placebo)

I sort of dissed gray before I actually seen it on the table. Once I seen it on the snooker table I realized that the contrast between the colored balls and the cloth cause the balls to stand out well. The colored balls really sort of pop to the eye because of the contrast.

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that ping.
Supposedly the red dye is to hide discoloration on the shells. Discoloration doesn't hurt the nuts but it's supposed to look ugly.

My proposal is to use a threaded multicolor fabric that matches the new RGB lights to optimize specular effects.
Can you put the add fibers around the cloth without changing the properties of the ball cloth dynamic too much?
Adding the fibers would be to make the cloth appear shiny when a special purpose light and a special purpose glasses are used to observe the "northern lights"
The purpose of the dye would be to create an additive effect for the light reflection.
If not the fibers, then can you put make a solution bath for the green cloth to embed reflective particles in the cloth. The particles would be set to match the LED lights.

I was always in the blue (ideal modern option) or green (traditional) camp...but grey looks really sharp and the neutrality of it I think would make it look good in almost any space. I've been seeing it used in some tournaments and think it's great on TV too
Great idea!!!!!! I know nothing about pool table cloth or adding fibers to create different effects but I'm going to get right on that, I will be starting a pool table cloth company from scratch. Anyone with experience in creating pool table cloth (especially with special effects) please send a resume to me for due considerment, TIA.
For paints they add sparkle glitter and then its shiny.
Can you add sparkle at the right particle size so it does not interfere with the pool cloth dynamic. Or at least minimal interference.
Making the cloth more shiny is the start of something better.

Programming that is a beast, it is just walkaround perspective geometry, should be math based.

I think red cloth used to be “in”. When you went to a dealer a lot of the tables had red cloth on them. This was before players were so concerned with ball to cloth contrast. I personally would shoot on green over blue any day of the week. But everyone seems to choose blue most now. For some reason the balls are harder for me to see on the blue. Maybe because of my astigmatism I don’t know. Plus the lighter cloth makes the table look bigger in my eyes also.
Oh on the OP is people go with the color they like. My friend got a dark blueish gray on his cause he liked the color. Most normal people that want a table don’t really care about the color they get as long as they like it.
I’ve played on red before and can’t remember missing because of the cloth color. The tournament I played at a bar with my father regularly when I was 12/13 had red clothed 9 footers. My home table growing up had three different cloths but never green or red on it. Some were nappy too(felt). Once again color of cloth never made me any worse or better. Maybe it did but not by enough for me to ever notice. Bringing me to the conclusion that cloth color is a really small variable in someone’s play. The color doesn’t matter.

I’m also pretty sure the guys pick cloth color most of the time. And a lot of them will buy cheap cloth over the premium just to save money. How many of those red tables have Simoniz cloth on them? Probably only a few.
Nirvana is a 1920’s Brunswick six (6) legged 5’ x 10’ pool table (subway or pockets doesn’t matter) with Simonis Green cloth & overhanging drop lights is my all time favorite set up. I enjoy the nostalgic appearance and also playing 4 1/2” CP & 5” SP.
