Do you shape a new tip with the tip being full height from the manufacturer, or do you cut the tip down before you sahpe it? I know a cue repair person that likes to cut them down. I wonder what your playing preference is.

A repair person is giving you less tip, therefore more return trips for tips.
It is called a business plan:D

When I install them for other folks I ask what they like. When I put them on my own cues I ALWAYS cut it down. Really "tall" tips always seems spongy to me, especially le pro's, triangles, and other single layer tips. I even cut down my own moori's . sure it's less tip and won't last quite as long. But, I think they tend to play better immediately and with less break in time.

I like to cut a new tip down to 1/8" side wall with a nickle radius for shaping. I've seen a lot of pro players using tips that have been cut way down close to the ferrule and I think most pros prefer their tips cut down over leaving them full.

Thats the same reason the cue repairman told me. I have noticed that I seem to get better feedback from the cue when the tip is thinner.

I use the full tip when I replace them. I shape them to a dime radius and usually touch them up after each playing session with a Willard shaper which I carry in my cue case.

I also cut my Everest down to 1/8th inch sidewall or about halfway, I think the full height tip of any kind play like $hit. It's a shame that Everest or other Tiger tips arn't just a little taller so I could slice them into two tips.--Leonard

Always cut down some. if its on a 12.75 or 13mm i just cust down little. But if your putting a moori or molavia on a 11.75 and dont cut it down about half it looks like half a ferrule.

So on the Everest tips do you basically start going into the red "replace the tip" layer when you start shaping it? What happened to me when I cut down my everest :)

Cutting tips down must help the break in time. I really like the way a thinner tip feels and sounds.

I do my own tips and take off a few layers, how much I take off depends upon how high the tip is.
I don't like my tips too tall and they last plenty of time even without the full height.

For me it doesn't matter, I will do whatever the customer wants. It seem that many people like their new tips taken down about 1/4th to 1/2 a full tips height because they think it plays better being shorter.

However, I recommend not cutting a tip down until it has been played with for awhile and has slightly mushroomed. This way it is compressed and it should not need very much work to keep it dressed.
