Do you dress up for matches?

If I was a pro I would dress up, for sure. not for practice but when I was playing in front of people-unless the cloths made me play worse, i couldnt make a ball with long sleves, or a bow-tie. but if I was a pro tht might not bother me.

since i'm not a pro i dress terrible, infact I go out of my way to be as comfortable as possible, i play barefoot, even in fancy pool rooms-if the owner lets me, one night about 6 months ago I was playing for 3 hours with the owner of a very fancy top notch room with no shoes on, I aske his permission as I wouldnt want to embarass him or pool room, he likes it that I play barefoot, so I did. My cloths are awalys clean but dont match as a rule. It dosent matter to me, i like to be comfortable. I have s few pool rooms that allow me to play barefoot. I played in the Reno open bare foot too. one joint we played in after hours i played with no shirt on, it was just me and my friends. i'm a bum.

if there is a dress code then yes i would follow it, but i dont pay in those spots often.

My mom always says to "dress the part you want to play." I think it applies here... if you are out playing the part of a committed, respectable pool player, then dress that way:D ;) Plus, the chicks like it better when guys dress nicely!! (added bonus)

Dressing nice to impress the chicks is my M.O.

Being single has a big influence on my desire to dress nice I think.

Good man :D We appreciate that for sure!

Wink, wink...

LOL... just kidding. But serious about the dressing nice stuff. It is a HUGE plus.

When I was in L.A. last weekend for a convention, I went out gambling 3 nights in a row in a suit & tie.

Normally I look like a bum.

I have made the most money gambling at pool when wearing a coat and tie, hence the other nickname, "Joey with a tie". :D

Getting all dressed up for the women when single is a plus. But if I started getting all prettied up for the women at my pool hall my g/f might start thinking I was cheating on her. If you are looking to impress a woman dress nicely. If you are comfortable with the woman you have, dress comfortably:D

I was at practice the other day and there was this young guy, with the LOWEST waistband on a pair of jeans I have ever seen. In one ghastly view I saw the top of the "hedges" at "Coney Island", if you catch my drift.

Being a raging heterosexual first and having a queezy stomach second, I averted any further gaze.

Disgusting.

It's not a bad idea to try to impress the woman you are comfortable with every now and then too!;)

I busted a couple of my buddies a few weeks ago at my place. I had been on the boat drinking/swimming out in the bay. When I pulled up they were waiting for me on the dock all dressed up for Friday night. I was soaking wet, drunk, and wearing a swimsuit. I proceeded to take their money while I drank another 12 pints of Budweiser, and they were drinking water. They couldn't leave my house fast enough after they were out of cash, and as they left I said: "Don't forget to tell your friends that not only did you get beat by a drunk, but you got beat by a drunk in a swimsuit!"

When the New York State 9 Ball Championships were held in Binghamton, NY every year there was a dress code. If you wanted to play, you dressed accordingly. I think there is a dress code for the Joss tour, also. Some tournaments have dress codes, some don't. If you won't play because of a dress code, then you just don't care to play. The way we present ourselves to non players can be important to pool's image. I don't mean to practice or in local events that don't have a dress code, but I've talked to people who wouldn't even consider playing if they couldn't wear cut-off jeans, t-shirt, and flip-flops. You can dress comfortably without looking like a slob.

A few years back my wife saw me leaving for a local weekly pool tournament and I was wearing some dressier clothes. She looked me up and down and said "you look good. <pause> hmmmmm" I knew what that meant.

The more I look like im dressed to go to the homeless shelter, the less heat I get for going out by myself and not returning until 3am at times. I get off the hook alot though as I usually go straight to the pool room from work, so I dont have time to go home and get my homeless bum mojo going.

I dress nicely for work, and many times go to play straight from there, so usually end up being the only one in the room with pants that stay up on their own and no underwear showing. You guys must see it all the time as well, playing a teen, and all you see when they are shooting is pants down to the knee and his boxer clad ass in your face.

I personally love looking at old events where everyone, including the audience, is in a top hat and suit and tie. I cringe when I see people wearing ripped pants and sleeveless shirts. To me it spells migrant laborer getting ready to pick some oranges.

Too funny, as your 'good ole days' brought a story to my mind in the other direction. Check out "Tres Bien Ensemble" by George Fels on JossWest.net. Times are changing, but they always come right back around....

frankly i dont care how i am percieved by others as the only opinion of oneself that matters is your own.

I'm not ragging on you but it's attitudes like this that are ruining this world. "Me, me, me." No one ever thinks of the group anymore. "I'll do whatever the hell I want to." People really need to start backing off on that attitude because it really is a problem. We live in a society and sometimes you gotta bite the bullet and do a little conforming.

not that you not wearing shoes playing pool is bringing the world down mind you

Those ass clowns with the ass of their jeans down around their knees and their boxers riding high are one of the bigger reasons why this sport doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Who the hell wants to sponsor people like that?

and those types of guys, or some form of them, have been hanging around pool rooms since the dawn of time

In bigger tournament I wear dress pants and either a dress shirt or a nice polo with dress shoes.

Other then that, Im rocking jeans, golf shorts, a polo, maybe a t shirt and nikes.

I CANT play in socks or bare feet. Weirds me out.

When you look good, you feel good.

That, in turn, helps mentally. Especially in pool, to me "feel" is everything - so by taking the time to look good, it's easier to walk in there and be confident that you're gonna win too.

Now I am not a big fan of getting all dress up but the other night there were (2) guys playing in the tournament that could have passed off real well for homeless. I mean their shirt, and pants were in need of some serious time in the wash tub, and maybe sewing up some of the hole would also have been nice. I can not understand why people have money to drop on Beer, and can not come to a tournament in clean non raggy cloths.

Was this another phantom tournament or can you tell us the name of this place? Did you win?

Your question deserves NO reply, but I did not want you to think I what you post above.

I wouldn't say that I dress up to play but I'm most comfortable when wearing good, well fitting clothes. The only time you would see me looking shabby is when I'm working around the house, painting or working in my wood shop. I dress well to play golf, too.

As others have said, I have to feel right to play my best and if I look like a bum, I feel like one and I play like one. (I occasionally play like a bum while dressed properly but it isn't the clothing that causes it.) I have never played well when dressed like crap.

That's just me. BTW JMD in VA always dresses nicely; sometimes better than he plays. :D

Here in Japan we take our shoes off at the door and are barefoot in the house. When I went to America I instinctively took my shoes off at the door and walked around in my socks the whole day. My socks were so dirty by the end of the day that it wasn't even funny, and this was in a very clean home. Carpets may look clean but if you wear shoes in the house trust me, they are filthy. How anyone can walk around a pool room in their socks or bare feet is beyond me. Nasty, nasty, nasty!!
