Do you have a house bet?

When sparring partners come over to play on my 7' Diamond the house bet is 8 ball, race to 13, alternate break, ACS rules for $20. The money value is typically negotiable and usually insignificant, but I do prefer to play for something.

I feel that a race to 13 is just long enough for either player to catch a gear or come out of slump. Keeping the same bet across multiple people helps gauge my own progress.

Anybody else have a house bet or any input to improve mine?

My buddy and I usually do a race to 7. Best out of 3 sets. If he wins the first set then its going to be a long night and I usually beat him. If I win the first set I can either finish it up or finish the beer I brought over before leaving. Sadly, he moved so no more house games.

I like to thank you and others who have a home room and have people over.

We only do $5.

I had a tad bad situation at my house once and it immediately became a no gambling zone.
If my buddies and I play more than the $5 then some of the winnings go back to the house. If I'm like up $20 then I will kick down $5 for his beer or the next night.

House games are a lot of fun and the only thing I don't like is behaving myself. It is still the person's house and his home court. So there are things I can't do there where I can normally get away with at the pool hall.

Do share! My games are with people I consider friends and the money value for both parties is so insignificant that it keeps it from getting too
emotional.
Friend brought an unknown over and unknown wanted to gamble.

I was a pretty well known player in the area, around or at the top end of skill in any room around...iirc, we had been playing for a while prior to me agreeing to a money game so he had to know I could play a little.

He couldn't win, didn't like it and got shitty with me. I didn't take his $ and he stayed shitty. Big dude too, kind of a roughneck type.

Wife and young kids in the house...not right to expose them to that shit and I would die or kill if they suffered directly.

I can’t play for free
To me, pool is similar to poker in that SOMETHING should be bet otherwise someone's typically not trying. I had a buddy I used to play, and we played for all-you-can-eat at the pool hall. They only served simple food like fries and cheeseburgers, but if it was going on the others guy's tab, you'd be amazed how much we could eat. We had great fun stuffing it in just so the loser could watch. Good times! :)

Exactly. It doesn’t have to be an all out war. Can play for $10-$20 it’s cool.

I play backgammon $25/point and the winner buys lunch. So it levels things off a bit. Nobody gets hurt. Social action is cool action.

Not putting some form of a price on what I’m doing is always a waste of time. I have no time to waste.

Unless they insist I don't bet with friends. Well, to be more exact, I don't bet with friends. The policy started over half a century ago. I was the only one obsessed with pool so was soon head and shoulders above my friends on a pool table so it wasn't gambling. When a newcomer came into the group I sometimes had to demonstrate things to them once or twice but they were usually glad to get with the program. The fifty cent to a dollar beers or similar was as high as the bets got.

I still refuse to bet friends. I don't like laying down to lose and I don't like taking their money.

I can't gamble with friends I've met outside the pool world. Trying to figure out game or ball spots is never an easy agreement. The guys I play with at the pool hall, no issues gambling there, but none of them have been to my house to run a few.

9-Ball race to 5 for $25 was always the default back in the day. Friend or foe, if you wanted to play, you laid down your $25.

You know damn well two good players can't be in the same room together. Gambling is bound to happen because both guy want to test themselves.

I think you acted properly and bringing unknowns is a big no. First and foremost its a home. Not a pool room.

We have another buddy who brought over an unknown guest too. He got chewed out. LOL

I have been playing three cushion billiards exclusively, for a few years.

Those people don't bet directly (loser pays table time ($20+ per hour and sets last 60-90 min) and I am told it is thought insulting to the player and disrespectful to game to make it a financial pursuit.

These people also celebrate good play from an opponent.

These people also participate in a handicapping system that makes every match fair.

I have never seen an argument between players about their game.

Race to 5 for $10.

Just cheap fun, but pool like golf has to have at least a bit on the line.

I don't make the rules, I just abide by them... 😁
